Hi, I recently purchased a Defender 90 in the UK and I'm bringing it back to America to spread the British love. I got the V5C and Bill of Sale from seller. However, I'm trying to get it titled in America and they require a title document that shows the year of the vehicle. The V5C shows first registration, not year of vehicle. I know they don't do "Titles" like they do in the States, but is there anything I can request that is the same idea as a title to show ownership and vehicle info? Thanks and I appreciate your help very much.

All there is in the UK is the V5, there are no other official documents available, take it back to the DVLA equivilant that you have and get them to tell you exactly what official documents they require, yours wont be the first UK imported vehicle so they must know the procedure...

Unfortunately they aren't thinking outside the box, because it says on it "This is not proof of ownership" and it shows "First Registration", not year of vehicle. How do you show ownership of a vehicle in the UK? Thanks for the quick reply.

What is the" year of vehicle"? What do they mean?

They are saying that the 1984 that is on the V5 just shows when it was first registered, not when it was purchased or model year.

V5 is showing the model year on the registration  Give them purchase reciept? Or am I being blonde?

A proof of ownership can be many different things, for most its a scrap of paper that says 'sold as seen, £XXXX, signed A.nom', there is no official proof of ownership document available in the UK, not a standadised document anyway. As for year of production, you can request this from the vehicle manufacturer or work it out from the VIN number but again there is no official documentation you can get to prove this.

As I said you need to ask them exactly what documentation they want, if you want a build letter/reciept of purchase then write one yourself, its all someone else will do for you anyway.

a receipt, its not usually passed on with the vehicle though, unless you're lucky and get a very full service history.
at a long puch you may be able to contatc landrover UK, or a uk dealer and they may be able to do something officious looking for you with the original purchase date on.

The V5 even says that it's not proof of ownership. Excuse my ignorance, but is the title not to show that it has been altered to meet us legislation? Do you not have to use a registered importer?

Thanks for all the replies. I have a bill of sale and the V5, so I guess I'm just going to have to argue some sense into them....

I understood you could purchase a document from Land Rover which indicates the build date. Try telephoning Land Roverthemselves.
