I got a 1982 series 3 diesel 88'' and after much wailing and gnashing of teeth it looks like I will be needing a replacement engine. The engine kicks out vast amounts of blue/black smoke. I just need to do a compression test, but am pretty sure that its knacked. When the pistons were out there is no evidence of honing higher up in the bore, only lower down where the rings don't travel, and the bore was at the upper limit of tolerance size for +20 pistons. Does anyone know where there is a decent yard that has land rover engines down near Portsmouth, or anyone else that has a resonable engine going spare.

before going down that road, of replacement engine, diesel engines are prone too baking the rubber valve stem seals rock hard have you checked them, if they are hard the oil will get past and get into the bores and burn, hence the blue /black smoke, and a lot of people jump to the conclusion that the blue/black smoke is caused by a fooooked engine, worth checking, i have a bottem end of a 2286 engine pistons, crank, every thing other than the head ,injection pump or starter but i live in south wales, and the engine is ok. regards jim.

I done a complete valve change, new valve stem seals, new rings, replaced one piston, checked the timimg chain, checked injection pump timing, still need to do compression test again, and check out fuel pump and injectors. I will try do a compression test first and see what the outcome is.
