hey guys n gals.
anyone got any experience of replacing the rear door lock barrel?
I'v a 1997 300tdi 90 csw and the rear lock is knackered.cant get a key in from th outside, and can only lock front in'tside.
I'm lookin to replace all 4 barrels on my wagon (2 side doors, rear and gas cap), but am a lil nervous bout takling th fronts first so thinking i'l practice on't rear.
Any experinces how hard a job it is?I'v got the haynes manual-any help with wat tools i'd need?any tips or warnings not to do it and let a mechanic do it??wats the worst that can happen?

AND best place to purchase new barrels?
any help'l b much appreciated

I got a new lock barrel from Rimmers - seems OK.

I've only replaced my rear door lock barrel (anyway all my other ones - on an '83 110 SW - will be different from yours). It was dead easy - exactly as described in the Haynes Manual.

Remove the lock assembly from the door (4 screws/bolts on the inside - you may need to take off the door trim first) - careful not to damage the gasket between lock & door. With the key in the lock, push down (I used a very small jeweller's screwdriver) in the small hole on top of the barrel holder to depress the small plunger; wiggle the key a bit & maybe shake upside down & out it comes. Replacement is just slide the lock barrel in with the key in it.

Then put the whole thing back on the door.

Hope this helps.

I cant get a key in the lock, so i will hav a problem removing the old barrel? readin the haynes it says bout usin th key and a srewdriver.

ahhhhhhh.right, errr so buy 'whole lock' are ya talkin bout handle, all platings, plus barrel + everyting on th inside which allows ya to lock from in'tside landy?do ya know if the haynes will b of much use here?

also, any idea where I can get hold of the entire lock, barrel shabang?

Yep - the lot. It's all one piece & non-serviceable except for the lock barrel.

Try Rimmers, Craddocks or Paddocks. Bolt on, bolt off job.

you could drill it out (carefully) and try a new barrel... whats the worst that could happen? cock it up and have to buy a new unit? which you may have to do anyway. try taking it apart 1st, if the barrel wont move. drill it.

bit of a thread revival here but i thought id answer this.

just taken me about 2 minutes to remove a barrel from a tailgate lock without the key.

see the hole in the casing? well, you need the key to turn the barrel to line the pin up with this hole.

however:

the pin is in line with the key slot in the end of the barrel.

take a 3 mm drill and drill into the casing, same depth inwards as the hole but further around the casing, in line with the key slot.

drill through here until you reach yellow metal swarf. thats when you know you drilled out the pin.

barrel will now remove with relative ease. the new key fitted into it so i pulled it out with that :)
