Ok, Td5 engine, blew headgasket and so I had the head skimmed and sorted properly. 300 miles later a light pinking noise developed and started to blow white smoke, with associated rough idling and hard to start but would run. Thought it was a lash adjuster but found out the fuel system was down to about 1/2 a bar. So lines flushed, tank off cleaned out crud, pump replaced, fuel filter replaced and finally she managed hold a vacuum, so with pressure now back to normal, she started and....still had a really bad tick over with emitted smoke. So, hearing of fuel wash on the rear cylinder causing burnt valves, off came the head again....to find burnt valve on no5 cylinder, impacted piston crown to valve and on rotating the crank, no 5 piston either separated or damaged at the crank. So, my question is this. Will a TD5 from a discover fit straight in as a replacement, I’m thinking the top end I have will be fine once I replace the damaged valves. It’s a manual SWB, 10P engine, and will use my existing top end with a standard discovery block? Anyone advise me please.

AFAIK, there are some subtle differences, one being the Waste Gate Control Valve. These are present on the Disco Td5 but not on the Defender Td5. Not sure of the others but hope someone will fill in the gaps.

Thanks, I’d heard some sensors were in different places and was concerned what issues this might bring up with the ecu, having to extend or retire the harness is not something I’d enjoy.

Well, to solve it I’ve bought a second hand unit with loom and ecu so shall fit this. Thanks for the help

I seem to remember that the crank position sensor is in a different location on the bellhousing, but if you are only changing the engine you won't need to worry about that.
