So, after a spectacular MOT failure at the end of October, I bit the bullet and had Challenger 4x4 replace the chassis with a galvanised reproduction one. At the same time I had the clutch done as that had been slipping, the winch bumper done (as the original had been welded to the rotten chassis, springs and shocks replaced with Terrafirma stuff and all the bushes with some of the poly type. Cost me more than I paid for the beast about 3-4 years ago. The drive is utterly transformed. It's no longer like driving a boat wobbling all over the place but is tight (for a 3 inch lift) and confidence inspiring.

Anyway, the reason for my question is that the new chassis has no number on it. Am I expected to have the original number stamped onto the new chassis and if so who can do this? Otherwise what should be done as obviously as it stands the V5 has the old chassis number on it and I don't want any trouble with the law!

a lad who i know rebuilt his 90 on a galv chassis,he hasnt got a no. stamped on his but he keeps a photocopy of the original purchase reciept for the galv chassis in the landy,he been pulled twice now by the police and its satisfied them both times.however i would get in touch with dvla they'll tell you what to do,i wouldnt stamp the no. on yourself

gidgrace,

Can't help with the question(but contacting Swansea sounds like the best plan), but mine was at Challenger just before Xmas and I saw a 90 in matt green that had just been put on a galv chassis. Was that yours? It looked bloody nice. :)

you dont have to restamp number as long as vehicle has a vin number attached to vehicle, you can re stamp you own number it is only wrong to try and mislead ,when i rebuilt my light wieght with galv chassis i had to make my own vin plate as there wasnt one with vehicle but as long as legit no problems

Your new chassis adopts the chassis number of your old one, which is why your old chassis should have been destroyed. Otherwise there will be two chassis with the same number on the road. If your old one is still in circulation then one of the two vehicles should have been re-registered as a Q plate.

My new galv chassis has no visible number. I've considered stamping it onto a metal plate and then bonding this to the new chassis with some kind of glue. I wouldn't want to stamp through the new galv.

as i said you dont need to have chassis number stamped on chassis as long as vehicle has vin number which is chassis number ,dvla are only worried about rung vehicles or vehicles that have been built out of parts as they under a points system where you have to have enough of the original vehicle to retain vin number and reg number not enough and they inspect it and give you q plate just changing chassis would not require you to notify them ,unless you changed engine ,axles ,body at same time

Judders, that was indeed my NATO Green beast that you would have seen :)
The guys at Challenger weren't entirely sure what to do which is why I came on here asking. The old chassis has been destroyed - it was utter scrap anyway. It sounds like nothing is actually required but I would like to get the original number stamped into the new chassis to avoid any questions and also to make thieves job a bit harder if it got nicked. I think I'd better tell the insurance co though just in case they have any rules on it. I'm with equity redstar via Adrian flux.

Thanks for everyones advice so far.

Mate - going down the same route. What I was advised by the supplier of the glav chassis was to keep the chunk of old orig chassis with chassis number on, and also the reciept for new one - that will be fine. If you do go down the DVLA route, they have known people who have had to take their defender through a new SVA test and have had the car off the road for a fair few months while it all gets sorted!! Although, i'm sure there maybe people who have had the SVA done in a few days . . . guess choice is yours . . .

As well as talking to Challenger, maybe work chatting to insurance company - don't want to give them any excuse not to pay up if a claim was ever needed!!!)

Cheers
