Not going to reinvent the wheel because Hippo already has an awesome writeup of the process here: https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/freelander-1-vcu-bearing-replacement-how-to-guide.156068/

Instead, I'll just post a few thoughts and and "what I'd do next time" tips:

  • You need a 17mm and 15mm spanner, 10mm socket, and E10 and E12 spanner and socket. I used air tools which made the job easier.
  • I lifted the Freelander onto 4 axle stands. I'm too "big" to do it with the vehicle on the ground (well, OK, I could have, but it would be an unnecessary hassle.
  • The prop and VCU are heavy, so if you have mates who owe you a favor, it's payback time. Otherwise, I managed by benching it onto axle stands then using my knees to get it down and up.
  • Soak the splines in advance with WD40 or your favorite tipple. Or take it off, let it soak overnight. One side for me came off easy (I tapped it with the punch on an air hammer) but the other side fought me all the way.
  • Allow a couple of hours.
Otherwise, job done! Any questions, feel free to ping me.
