Well, thanks for the response guys. I guess I'll keep things the way they are,it was just a thought! Actually I'm really pleased with way it runs and I agree it probably is quicker than the td4.It's just that I've read so many scarey stories about the 1.8 I can console myself with the fact that I paid just £1600 for an 03 model with just 90k on the clock. Cheers.

The scary stories are true, but are the result of owner negligence. If the worst should happen, we can help you - and it will be a better motor when it's done.

Ok I must qualify that, MHM is right in principle. What I meant was that someone who knows to check coolant levels often, and has had the MLS and PRT fitted is statistically less likely to suffer HGF than an owner who drives the car into the ground and then gets a garage to fix the symptom and not the cause. The only possible "cure" is the EWP and we will see how that pans out - but it still won't protect the head from a burst coolant hose.

What I'm trying to say is, get to know your engine, nip potential problems in the bud and do your checks often. That way you will be far less likely to get HGF, but there is no guarentee :(. Sometimes the damage has already been done - as in my case.

I keep trying to kill mine but the bloody thing just won't die:D think it must be a goodun!!! We'll see

It's only seen 1 recovery truck. That's cos I filled the alternator with mud off road and didn't make it home before the battery went flat! So to be fair not really a freelander curse:)

For some bizarre reason your alternator is on the bottom of the engine, mine's at the top. Weird.
