removing the EGR

Won't affect mot emissions, that's a smoke test carried out flat out, when the egr is inactive anyway, so has no bearing on an mot!!!! A stuck open one will make it fail as it produces more soot! benefits vary vehicle to vehicle, from not really noticeable to quite surprising. The latter generally means your egr was faulty!
