I want to remove the steering knuckle on my td5 disco. Top ball joint is loose, but cant get the bottom to give in. Ive noticed on rave it says to remove the collect tension nut on bottom, but other people say not to and just hit it with hammer and it should break the taper? Can someone please clarify, do i just hit it (as i have been doing with no luck so far) or does that bottom collet nut need to come off?

RAVE says to take the tension collet out AFTER the knuckle is removed from the car.

Get a crick in my neck looking at your picture!

The normal way to jar a taper loose is to get 2 X 2lb hammers and hit the body of the taper from opposite sides at once.

Ive got it off. Not ideal, but i put the nut on the thread and tapped it a few times on the side of the nut and off it popped. Bloody thing, it was a pig, but when i look inside the taper i can see why, its very corroded, mainly because the collect nut has a slit in it that lets in moisture to the taper.
