Anyone got any tricks how to remove badly rusted top mounting bolts on a p38's rear shock absorbers?

The nuts are crumbling and can't get anything up there in the tight space. :(

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Shockers have fixed nuts you will never undo those. Remove arch cover and get a good socket on the bolt heads. Plenty of Plus gas. That is what you undo not the nuts.

thanks for the suggestions guys. what happened was:

yes I did remove the wheel arches to get more room.
then we chiselled the rust off the bolt head so it went down to about 17mm. finally we hammered a 17mm socket on it and undid with a breaker bar. bingo!

I did buy a set of Irwin expansion sockets and these were going to be the last resort, they have a very good design and will probably use them in the future. many thanks for the tip james.

I found this thread as I had to do this job this weekend. Here are my tips, which may be of use to someone in the future.

Clean the back of the mounting and the bolt head with a wire brush to remove the rust. Soak with it Plus gas and leave it 24 hrs.

Use a good quality 6 sided socket and give the bolt head a few good whacks with a hammer. I tried to undo the bolts but they were still stuck solid so I gave them another good soak with Plus gas and left it again for 24 hrs.

Using an extension and a breaker bar the bolt now started to move very slowly. Make sure the socket is squarely on the bolt head, if you round it you'll only make the job even harder. My shock absorbers were completely rusted in at the top, one had been replaced sometime in the past but the other was probably the original fitted 20 years ago.

I didn't bother even trying to undo the bottom nuts, a cordless angle grinder and cutting disk removed them in seconds

New shocks now fitted, job done.

Rear top bolts?
I got under removed as much crud with a wire brush and kept soaking it with plus gas for few days.
Think it was 17mm? Hammered it on but it kept wanting to twist off. I put an extension on the 1/2” socket, put the wheel back on and used it to stabilise the socket square on the bolt head.
I cleaned it all up, rust treated and sprayed before putting back on so it doesn’t rot.
