Hi, I'm thinking of removing the EGR setup on my TD5. Some say this makes no difference to emissions and increases engine power some say it does. Any ideas from those far more knowledgable?

it does help to remove it ,it is fitted to reduce nox emissions ,but if it fails can make engine run poor and if it doesnt fail it cokes inlet manifold and dosent increase engine life ,

It's the 1st thing most people do after doing a search on here. Nice, cheap and quick to do and as James and Bigeeeee say removes a possible problem before it happens. Get it gone.

I've just done mine. I can't say I can tell if it has ade a difference as I removed the plug in ECU cip. (following a wee mishap with a deepbit of river).
Incredibly easy to do. Give the bolts a good soaking for a few days with a penetrating oil and get a set of allen keys which will fit your socket set.

It's better the engine running on fresh air than a combination of fresh air and exhaust gasses.
Also if yours is EU3 the butterfly set-up is quite a restriction so better off without it!
:)

Have just done mine! Fairly straightforward, only problem was getting the 2 bolts off the end of exhaust manifold, Allen key headed bolts too soft and allen key just turned in the head. Eventually removed manifold complete with EGR pipe, ground off the heads and removed remainder with bench vice. After that easy. Job done! Now what's next?

I removed mine and can hand on heart say I noticed no difference what so ever. My td5s done 140000 miles and the inlet was rotten with the black stuff so the egr had not been functioning properly for some time.

I'm happy I removed it after seeing the crap in the manifold but after 1500+ miles I noticed no performance or hike in mpg.
