L322 Remove cylinder head with exhaust manifold?

Hi
I have a L322 with the BMW M62 engine. I am going to remove the cylinder heads. The book of words says the exhaust manifolds should be removed first but this looks like a very hard job! There looks to be enough room to remove the heads with the manifolds, has anyone any experience of this?

Interesting, do you speak from bitter experience?
The four nuts holding the down pipes to the manifolds have rusted away such that no socket or grips can get hold. The only solution will be to cut the studs. Does anyone know if the studs in the manifold are replaceable?

He does speak from experince......well honed amd learned experience.

Removed, stripped and rebuilt a replacement engine for a friend of his.....on the driveway.....in all weather.....

The experience wasnt too bitter, he and his mate did a bang up job....

Have you tried the Irwin nut removers they are very good and a must for old green oval motors

Remove the manifolds first.

Or the entire engine, like I did.

If you want a challenge try doing that

Leave them on - remove the two bolts that attach to the exhaust flange after the header. Have a helper as the extra weight will be felt. Install them the same way, but be alert of the coolant hoses on Bank 2 as they can get in the way. Have a helper guide the bolts into the exhaust flange or you will have to cut the exhaust to get it to fit.

Been there done that using both systems. Leaving them on is way easier and you can torque everything correctly.

It's a pain in the arse/near impossible to remove and refit the heads with the mani's attached.



Plus removing the bolts and levering the manifolds away isn't that difficult makes things much easier if you work on your own..
