Hello,

Just joined need some info/help. head gasket just been done on i.8 freelander all uprated parts including remote thermostat, problem we are having is exhaust is going red on tickover, timing spot on, would anyone be able to help or advise us. Thanks Rab.

Retarded timing, gases still burning as they exit the cylinders, timing not spot on then

This is indicative of a blocked catalytic convertor.

EDIT: or a faulty oxygen sensor

Would exhaust gases be able to heat a manifold to red heat AT IDLE ??

F1 engines get nice red exhausts at full power but a 1.8 FL at tickover ???

Must be some huge problem.........

Exhaust gases will be burning on exit from cylinder, something is retarding the ignition.
See what Freelaner says ^^

A very lean mixture will cause cylinders to burn hot, although I've never seen one heat the manifold like that, under power maybe...

Ratty had a similar problem in his 110 this cured it for a while

right guys,i think i sorted it out, correct me if am wrong, but if the timing belt was wrongly tensioned,ie too tight, this would cause the timing to run out and cause my red hot manifold?

well since i reset the tension,it doesnt get as hot an it pulls a lot better, coz even the local lr workshop couldnt find anything wrong, but when i was watching the tensioner with it running,it was way down past the wire bit that its supposed to line up with.
