Super job Cheaper aswell :D

another Q.

with my Steering guard i cant fit JATE rings to the front,
whats the best option?

1. Cut my guard and make them fit
2. Get a guard with them built in
3. Some other recovery point

For you to consider

LR Def 90 for example - fully loaded 2 tonne and add to this a difficult perhaps hilly area and further more a large dash of mud - you should be looking at something beyond the tonnage you outline.

Just my view, appreciate that shackles etc survive beyond this but still best to go for something well beyond the limit you expect

depending on your budget you could get a steering guard with recovery points, or use it as an excuse to get a HD bumper with them built in :D

I was under the impression that lifting strops had a high safety factor of 7:1
so therefore a 5ton Strop can handle upto 35ton. And as i would be using a bridle the 3.25t Shackles would share the load so effectively giving me 6.5t

Or am i barking up the wrong tree?

just get 2 forged jate rings and fix them on the same fixing as the front bumper but you will have to buy longer bolts

Thats my problem robint the way that my steering guard is attached i cant use the same fixing points without modifying the brackets that hold the steeering guard on

Yes to the shackle. No to the strop get a proper rated lifting strop that's a towing strop and 5tonne is breaking strain not SWL. A 5tonne lifting strop has a breaking strain of 35tonnes. 7:1 safety factor yu see.

It would have to be very heavily bogged down to come close to exceeding the breaking strain of a 3.25t shackle. I:E As a recovery rarely involved a dead weight lift or pull. from 3ft of liquid clay/mud.

Thanks kwhajh

Yu are right but as said above a towing strop is not a lifting strop.

Thanks redhand for clearing that up! I got mixed up with me strops!
Ill Look out for a LIFTING strop I've got myself a couple of those shackles.

Now gotta solve the recovery point problem

Ok, still of view that for a few extra quid go for extra tonnage, especially if off roading, clay is common and 1 or 2 ft of mince is enough to stress a component. These components are made with a FOS not such that you eat into the safety factor when you buy them, take your own view,Cheers

Boys. Something else to consider.

I had the pleasure of an RAC recovery this afternoon after my alternator took early retirement.:( Got towed back with a rigid link, but the tow eyes I still have fitted swung back and forwards during acceleration and braking. Luckilly the dude was an off roader and was cool about it so we kept going, but he could have refused to tow me.

The guy said Jate rings would have been even worse and he probably would not have been allowed to tow me home. For this sort of recovery you need a fixed towing eye.

I'm going for a steering guard with tow eyes, so I think I've got this sorted (have I??), but I suggest if not doing this you fit a rigid tow point somewhere to compliament your Jate rings, or even the existing tow eye thingies.
