Recommendations for off-road tyres

Hi all - this is a big ask, I am sure, but I want to buy a set of off-road tyres and wheels for my other half (actually, for his Defender!) for Christmas. I drive the thing, I even off-road it, but I know the square root of diddly when it comes to what I should buy.

I don't have limitless funds, and have found a set of four 31.10.50 x 15 KINGPIN Mud Terrain Wheel and Tyres for £380 new. They look nice and big and chunky, more so than the dual purpose tyres we have at the moment (cannot recall the make but they are 235-85 R 16, so my father in law tells me).

The 90 has a 2 inch lift (?) and lots of other bits and bobs on it, but as far as I know that is all on the suspension. Mainly when we go off roading he finds a bumpy rocky muddy track and scares the wits of of me on it, but we also have a farm and there is a fair bit of muddy rutty ground to cover. I want separate wheels for this because we also use it as a road vehicle.

Help from anyone more knowledgeable than me (and that is a big field) most welcome.

My old series had a set of Kingpin AT's on it and they were pretty good. Awesomely ****e on wet roads, but that's the same for any offroad tyre, but far better than their looks suggested when off-road, so I'd suggest that these might well be a very good tyre for the price.

Personally, I'd go for the cheap PUMA 31/10.50R15 tyres £74.80 each purely 'cos I like the tread pattern ... and fit 'em to 8j steel wheels from Paddocks 15x8 Black Modular which are the wheels I currently use, though I have 31 x 10.5 R15 BFG AT's on them.

I have just checked and the current tyres are General Grabbers (a name that I saw when I was looking earlier) - I definitely want something with more grip than that, since I managed to get stuck on a slope on the farm the other day with those and he's been bogged down on the wetter bits too. Would that apply to the Puma tyres? Also, I should have said that I would ideally have something that is road legal, because although we have a car transporter, we often drive to green lanes.

Another thing (and excuse me for being daft here) - if I buy rims and tyres separately, can I just take them to a tyre dealer and get them fitted on?

Oh, and the last thing - some of the tyres have inner tubes. Is that something that I need in an off-road tyre? I always thought it was better to have tubeless tyres.

Sorry to ask so many questions, I really want to get him the right thing.

Amazons or (now called puma) tyres are pretty good for a general good offroad tyre and on road manners. A coupls of lads use them trialling and seem to like them they are cheap and better than AT's in the muddy stuff.
 
I had amazons on mine and they were good tyres same tread pattern as Insa turbo, saharas. Just remember that they're directional and need to be fitted the correct way round and shouldn't really be swapped around.
 
silverstone extremes beat the special track imo, and super swampers beat both

i would go for a mud terrain that does both if you dont go into the crazy gloopy stuff. have a look at mickey thompson baja mtz, or the baja claw if you feel a bit more nutty. i am running the latter, and quite a few road miles with them also and they arent too bad, half decent on road manners in fact
 
Have insa special track on for a year now never came close to getting stuck. Also use them on road for driving to work with no probs just have to turn up the volume on the radio
 
Sure I've seen someone stuck with Special Tracks, can't remember where though...

I just put on a set of BFG 285 75 16s km 2s so far no complaints.

if you are series about off roading get special track / silverstone extreme or those super swamper bogger copies. you can get stuck in them, but generally it wont be because of traction. either the mud is so deep you couldnt get traction without paddles on the tyres, or you ground out.

in other words try hard enough and you can get stuck, but they grip like a sonofabitch. i had a go in a mates tacoma running them in CA and they were exceptional
