Thanks to Hippo and others for all the help. You guys are great.

Considering the issues I've been having with my engine and auto, I'm thinking of rebuilding both, and avoid spending $30k+ on a new car.

I've got almost 130,000 miles on my 2002. I figure I can do both jobs for about $6-7k, and potentially be able to get another 100k+ miles out of my truck. Any feedback on this idea would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

How much would it cost for a more reliable 2nd hand diesel Freelander in oz, as a comparison?

I'm in the US, where the diesel versions aren't available. I've heard here and from other sources that the diesel variants are much more reliable. I'd jump on one in a heartbeat if they were available.

A 2002 petrol version here, with around 100k on the clock sells for about $7000. I figure if I can get my engine and transmission both rebuilt for that price, it'd be well worth it over buying one with 100k miles on it. But the more I'm looking into it the more its looking like that may be an unrealistic price point.

Does anyone know if there's a td4 engine swap available in the states.

Sorry. NAS FL 1? I don't follow.

I wish I had the skills to do that kind of work. I was hoping I could get a shop to do the rebuild of both the engine and tranny for maybe $6,000 or so. Even though that's probably more than or about the value of the car, I figure it'd serve me for another 100k or more -- like a new car. But the cost is likely going to be prohibitive -- maybe upwards of 10k.

For that kind of money I can buy a late(r) model, low mileage Japanese sedan that'll go 200k with very little maintenance/repair.

Sound right?

Yeah, it's looking mire and more like it's time yo look for something else. If it was 6 grand, I might decide to go with it. But I have a feeling it'll be much more. On top of that there may be other things down the pike I'll have to address.

In speaking with the owner of the shop where I have the car, there seems to be a ray of hope in the possibility of obtaining a used or rebuilt engine and dropping that in. Install is pricey: $1600US. But if I can find a rebuilt engine somewhere for around $3000, it would certainly be worth it.

Another sliver of light is that he seems to think my trans issues can be remedied by a solenoid replacement (the trans can come out with the engine, saving costs there).

So, all might not be lost.

I'll keep you all informed on the progress. In the meantime, if anyone has any input, suggestions, etc. please do offer them. It would certainly be appreciated!

Thank you.

Hope you get sorted, a secondhand unit might be the way to go. If you can get one that's had new head gaskets & new timing belts fitted then that would really be the way to go.
Even if you could source a Td4 engine, apparently it would involve changes to the drivetrain & swapping over the wiring loom as well. People over here have looked at it but abandoned the idea when they've seen what's involved.
There are other people who've fitted different engines (seem to remember a thread on another forum about a guy fitting a Mazda engine) but they're few & far between as it involves plenty of re-engineering.

Best of luck.

Thanks, Chromiumuk. I never realized a rebuild would be so potentially daunting.

Does anyone know of a source for obtaining a rebuilt unit for this vehicle? I've searched and searched, and no company I've called seems to have them, and when I do find a used unit it has over 100k miles on it.

Surely someone has their own engine rebuilt, or bought a remanufactured unit before somewhere.

You'll need someone more local to you to answer that best but because the head gasket is such a weak point on these cars that few garages over here are willing to take on the repair & provide a warranty. As always though there are one or two exceptions so I'm sure that someone where you are must be able to help, it's just finding them. Hope you get some good news.

2002 freebie, didn't realise you were merican. For some reason I thought you were in oz, and not in the land of free petrol. As NI says, stick with the petrol. Was reading the other day around 39000 freelanders were sent to the US. Not sure if it's true. You'll need to search the web for peeps who will work on it, or have engines rebuilt available. Going to cost a fair bit.
