Hi all
got a 1997 4.0se
the rear wiper works fine but doesnt seem to squirt any water have tried cleaning with a pin does anyone have any ideas what to do or what to look for and where
Carl

I had the same problem when I got my P38 - I had a disconnected hose...

First thing to check is, is the washer tank full?? If so when you press the washer button does the motor run?? If it does then its most likely going to be a blocked non-return valve OR a disconnected pipe (probably at the non return valve).

nonreturn.jpg

the non-return vavle is marked number 10 on the image. open the tailgate right up and open the passenger side access panel in the loadspace to change the bubls. If you peer in there you should be able to see the non-return valve. See if its blocked or any pipes are disconnected.

If the motor IS running DONT keep pressing the washer button because if the pipe is disconnected you are filling up the rear with washer fluid. You can find this out by removing the panel for the bulbs and snaking your hand downwards. If its wet then you most likely have a disconnected hose.

thanks or the diagram
gone in bulb area to see the non return valve all seems connected though removed the valve an put cup on end of pipe to see if water is being transferred and it is
if i connect the valve nd the pipe water goes all over the lights area
not sure if is coming out of the valve as all the rear doors have to be shut to try it and its nigh on impossible to get in and see

am i right in thinking a non return valve should only allow things one way????????
i took out the valve and blew and sucked on both ends. it allowed air to go through bothends on the suck and th blow

anyway there is still no water coming out of the jet and i have given it the best clean i can

HELP me please
Carl

quite simple had the same problem just take out the jet and remove the ball part (the little insert that sprays the water) with a pin dont worry it wont break, now you will probably see that its full of gunge, just clean it out and replace the little ball and your done.

are you saying prize the ball out of the jet or do you have to dismantle the jet somehow as it is awkward to get to due to the spoiler type thingy
carl

remove the whole jet, you can do this by removing the plastic trim from inside the tailgate just push it out when you have done this then put a pin or needle into the ball where the water would spray and pry it out.

Had same problem with mine. I changed the jet for a replacement part from Halfords cost about £1.50. Checked the old one oce removed, and it was full of gunk.

I have exactly the same problem & tried out the same cleaning process without success.I can't seem to hear the pump operating when the washer button is pressed.Fuses all seem OK & bottle is full.
Any ideas anyone?

Do you know if this could be the cause of water build up in the tyre well?
My rear washer isn't working but I am also getting a small water build up in the tyre well every couple of days.I thought is was condensation but it could be linked to the washer problem.Only puzzle is that I can't hear the pump when I press the rear washer switch.
What do you think? Nearly scratched my head raw!

Mark, its possible that you have a leak in the pipe before the check valve. However if the pump isnt running then that wont be the proble. If you look at the diagram above then you can see 3 separate washer pumps, each one controls either the windscreen headlamps or rear screan. with the bonnet up get someone to try the windscreen washers, and the rear screen you should hear the pumps then. sounds to me like a pump has gone down.

I assume the pumps are indicated as number 16 on schematic diagram.
If the pump is working do you think that there is a connection between the rear wash not squirting & the small accumulation of water showing in the tyre well, which appears to be seeping out of the overlaps in the pressings of the tyre well.Could this be washer water from a leak or disconected hose making its way out & into the well.I have sprayed the car all around tailgate & in wheel arches with hose & there are no leaks. All carpets are dry so water is coming from within the car I believe. What do yo think?

Hi Mark, Yes if the pumps working then there could well be a connection between that and the water. I would check all around the boot area looking at the washer lines. If the problem was beyond the check valve (marked 10) then I would doubt it getting into the boot well.

what does the check valve do???
sould it be installed only one way or does it not matter there is a sort of triangle on it does this indicate the water flow direction???
should it only allow water one way??

yes, the non return valve does what it says on the tin. it doesnt let water return down the line. basically the idea is when you press the button water comes out instantly and you dont have to wait for it to make its way down the line. i should assume the triangle is the flow direction.

As for the water in the tyre well, i get that too, i have no idea where its from or why it accumulates but it does. it never gets enough to cause a problem but i always keep a roll of kitchen roll next to the spare and the bottom of the roll has got soaked in the past. Over the past two or three weeks I havent noticed any water build up though. There was certainly none on Thursday when we had all that snow and I went to get my tow rope out from the centre of the spare to rescue some stranded motorists.
