Good Evening People,
My rear wheel arches are on my to do list for the xmas holiday as they are really rusty. I was reading LRO at lunch today and on page 135 of the current issue some chap describes patching his wheel arches with glassfibre mat and resin/hardener.
Sounds good but the seatbelt anchors are very close. (mot)?
So, should i have a go at a plastic repair, or get my mate to weld em?

Advice would be appreciated

Ryan

unless you have experience with composite materials I'd stay well away! They are brilliant, but stupidly easy to mess up, meaning that they won't be very safe/strong

I'd say weld as well. BUT your seatbelt anchors are nowhere near your wheel arches. They pass thru the floor very near to the wheel arches it's true, but they are attached to the chassis and the floor plate is only there to stop them from moving around. They are not a structural attachment point.

The outer rear seat belts are three point belts. Once point is anchored to the chassis through the floor but there is another point anchored to the wheel arch. It is very common for the wheel arch to rust within 30cms of this point and cause an MOT failure. It MUST be repaired by welding.

and just to prove it... redhand, you should know it as yours are well rusted.
sorry for stealing the pic you posted on the other thread, this clearly shows the seatbelt point.
