Hi this is my first post have just bought a 2002 disco. On two occasions when I have had two people sitting in the back after switching of the engine on returning after a hour or so the rear suspension has dropped if I start it up and press the button on the dash it rises up ok.but when there is only the front seats in use it seams to stay up ok.but this afternoon we went down the shops and my wife sat in the back sure enough after parking it the back went down so I started it up and pressed the lift button on the dash up it went but this time it went down again after 20 min without anyone sitting in it its both sides that go down.Could it be air bags ,compresser, or electrics I am at a loss wouild really appreciate any advise
Thanks

ps forgot to say its when the engine is turned of and the person is sitting in the back that it seams to go down

the SLS stays active up to 30 minutes after the ignition is off and it has all kind of relevelling protocols... first thing on what u described is to replace both airsprings.... they have a paradoxical behaviour when a leak is present ... it's hard to go further with the diagnose as long as you can't rely on the bags....or at least do a test with soapy water first on the bags and within the compressor housing

Thanks for your advice just been out on my own and it stays up when parked, so it only does it when the back has a load on it when parked.I will order a couple of airbags and see if it cures it I see there are two types of airbag Dunlop and Contitech the Contitech are a lot more expensive are they worth the extra or are the Dunlops just as good
Thank again

Just had two Dunlop air bags fitted took about 1hr and it all works A1, Thanks for your advice

@Tobytess, you keep saying that you press the dashboard button to raise the rear end when it deflates.

Might I suggest that you read your owners manual then you will understand the function of that button more correctly. It is normally only required when off-roading and needed to drive over higher ground levels such as rocks or tree roots etc.

You should never need to press that button in normal operation, the car - with the engine running and all doors closed - should inflate the rear end automatically.

I understand that you have ordered the Dunlop air springs. You should know that there was a problem with these last year where they were being fitted and a significant number of them exploded!!!

The Contitect springs are the original equipment and are much better quality, albeit that they are more expensive.

Thanks for the advice I only used the dash button when the suspension had dropped onto the bump stops but since having the new air bags fitted all seems to be ok. I dont go off road so I will take your advice and only use it if using off road, I have allready had the Dunlops fitted so if I hear an explosion at the back I will know straight away what it is (but I hope I dont) thanks for your advice

Just for your general info there are two different components on the rear air suspension that need changing - every 3 yrs or so - to ensure reliable running.

The first is the air springs themselves; the second is the ride-height sensors. Both are in hostile environments (road muck and all weathers) but the height sensors are particularly prone to getting cacked up and giving incorrect readings. Fortunately they are cheap and easy to replace.

Thanks for the info all seems ok at the moment but if it starts playing up the first thing I will do is change the ride- height sensors

If you do decide to change the sensors, don't forget to DISCONNECT THE CAR BATTERY EARTH LEAD before touching the electrical conections of the sensors.

You'll regret it if you don't ;);)
