Hi all, search function hasn't thrown anything up? So here we are...

Has anyone changed their rear shocks? I am hoping to buy a 2007 HSE here in France but it just failed the French MOT on the shocks. It's about £230 to buy a set of oem for the rear (from the UK) but I have no idea if it's a relatively simple job - I think so, but any advice on tools/time/problems would be appreciated?
 
Not come across a Freelander 2 fail the MOT on shocks yet. How are they tested in France? Here in the UK, there is a visual inspection for leaks and a bounce test for damping effect.
I wouldn't even think about changing just 2 shocks at a time. I always think it's better to fit all 4. Having 2 old and 2 new will make some pretty strange handling and ride characteristics.
They won't be difficult to change, but you will need a spring compressor and a reasonable tool kit.

This vehicle has a leak....Have you changed the shocks on yours?
Not changed shocks on a Freelander 2 but I've lost count on how many shocks I've changed on other car's over the years. I expect it runs into hundreds though. They aren't generally hard to change, but when the spring is integral with the shock (strut) then a spring compressor is a must. Unless you are brave, desperate or stupid.
 
Must confess to playing Russian roulette in the past dismantling Spring assemblies, but as you get older you value your limbs and digits more, the other thing make sure vehicle is well supported, not just on a jack !!!
 
I've done a pair for a customer cos they were knocking. As struts go they're pretty straight forward. Other than a compressor I don't thing I needed any other special tools just basic hand tools. Was a while ago though
 
A mate of mine nearly had a serious injury changing a front shock on a Renault Fuego. He removed/ unbolted all the parts at the wheel end. undid the bolt or bolts not sure how many there were under bonnet, the strut flew out and the spring just missed him and embedded itself in the side of his shed he was working in.
That car didnt have a strut top, it used the body work as the strut top. I know he had real trouble getting it back together as there was not enough room for spring compressors.
On the other side he welded straps to the body and the spring to change the strut. Not recommended as its likely the spring will break later on but as car was probably only a year or two from the scrap yard not sure it really mattered.
 
had a broken rear Spring on mine and didn't even notice it, until it was replaced

couldn't afford all four so got a pair of new shocks and springs , all oem and blimey what a difference and sat considerably better, felt like a new motor

it only got an advisory from the mot and was suprised it wasn't an instant fail
 
I have had a few mercs in my time and virtually all of them broke springs at some time when I had them. sometimes you knew, sometimes only found out at MOT time.
 
Thanks for the link Very handy for the future! I have the two rear being paid for by the seller ( KYB).

Was it as simple as it looks to change the rear? I'll be buying some spring compressor to do the job,,,..

Might even do a video or pic sequence for anyone else who needs to do it.

You should be able to get a decent pair (Delphi) for around £130.00. Postage to frogland maybe high though.

that's what I done when I replaced mine , had a broken spring and decided to replace both sides complete with oem Delphi from my local Land Rover dealer , as I thought it had to come out anyway so may as well replace the lot and not have to worry about something else breaking
