I own a 1973 SIII and wanted to remove the bench seat and put in a seat (with belt) to accomodate a child seat any should I get a defender spec rear seat or are there other options / suggestions before I wreck this lovely vehicle?

you could just put the baby seat in the front middle seat and save yourself the hassle. That's what i have done. :)

On a personal note I wouldn,t put my baby in a car seat that only had a lap belt on. But then that is just my opion.:)

Int it amazin' wot a few years can do?
Can anyone else remember the furore which went on when compulsory seat belts were introduced (still not compulsory for lorry drivers) - all that angst about freedom of the individual and lengthy discussions as to whether it was better to be trapped by a seat belt or thrown clear?

none of my kids had seat belts - at least as babies - and its no good saying "there were less cars then" coz I come from years of no drink drive laws - used to regularly drive to London - listen to a band, get slaughtered and drive home fifty miles or so.

There is just to many idiots on the road now, that think cos its a landy its going slow so like pulling out in front of you to make ya brake hard.

Thanks Ian for the info - exmoortrim's approved seat is very nice but £ 495 each!, the front middle lap belt is an option ( i'd have to get one fitted ) but its the usual story, you'd never forgive yourself if you didn't try to have the safest set up for your kids, but my child seat i have in our diso has an option / approval to use a lap belt, is their any safety regs on this one?

dont get me wrong - i aint advocating not using a seat belt - but do yu honestly think " used to regularly drive to London - listen to a band, get slaughtered and drive home fifty miles or so." was not idiotic - and yu get a lot less of that today?

The seat i use for my daughter is only desiged to be used with a lap belt. What it has ( as do all child seats in AUS) is a strap that goes from the top of the seat to a purpose built bracket that i have installed in the panel behind the seats.
If it wasn't safe i wouldn't do it mate ;)

Thanks Auzboy82 got any brands or websites for the seat your're talking about, the seat I have ( in the disco) has both options but the lap belt option doesn't give me much faith because it just secures the seat at the lap ( obviously!) leaving a lot of play at the top i.e. the top of the seat would collide with the dash in the event of a smack. Also I wasn't suggesting that youre talking any chances with your princess.

I think driving 50 miles getting slaughtered and driveing home was idiotic but I think a very small minority of people would do that today, risk of getting caught. Are you talking about the days before the drink drive law?
People were far less educated on the dangers then.

It is law now for lorry drivers to wear seat belts when fitted which means unless you got an old ERF or Seddon, you pretty much got to wear them. Saying that, I dont know any drivers who have been nicked for not (and I aint talking bout them dumbarses that drive 7.5 tonners & think they are lorry drivers) However, if you drive through France and Spain without your belt....youre nicked and got an on the spot fine up yer arse. I think the only drivers who wear seat belts are newbies who drive for the likes of Tesco & Adsa.
When I wer a lad me old fella used to let me curl up on the rear parcel shelf of his morris 1800, now thats safety! if he was to crash I'd have gone thrown clear of any wreckage:confused:

I don't have a link but i will have a look around for you mate.
The seat i use is the same style as all car seats around here as they are what is required by Australian standards.
