I have been searching for a replacement rear license plate light unit as the one on the car is in a bad state, last MOT it got flagged. I managed to clean it up enough to make them happy but it is well past its best before date. I have searched the bay but from what I can see they are mostly in a similar condition. Has anyone modded theirs or know of a good one hanging about?

I’ve taken mine out and refurbed successfully. Got flagged as dodgy on MOT as was filled with slime making it dim then bulbs went. The screws on outside are rounded and plastic brittle so I took inside panel with 3rd bake light out, nightmare job. Bit of corrosion and muck in connectors but there’s not much to it cleaned up good and still works fine

Mine is also on its way.
The problem (as I see it) is that the lower trim-strip does NOT adequately seal against the glass; especially at the corners. Whenever is has been raining and I raise the upper tailgate section water drips out of the tailgate at the ends. this lack of sealing results in the whole bottom section of the upper tailgate getting regularly doused, the glass of the number-plate light goes green and slimy etc. You all know the rest.
Does anyone know how the trim is affixed? Can it be removed, a mass of sealant applied and then replaced over the sealant successfully?

Define which ‘trim’ you mean??
I took the whole thing apart from inside it will clean up and glue back sealed easily. Lenses push out. It’s inside panel is potch. The plastic fitted to outside paintwork is so bonded on over time it will not leak. This could be sealed on if I drilled the screws out and replaced so I could take it out from outside
