Many thanks PaulNo, there's usually a shim or two under the circlip. There is almost always a little movement, not usually that much though.

As a follow up to this James if I wanted to replace drive shafts and drive flanges how do I tell whether I have 2 or 4 pinion pinion diff? Yes. Unrelated to the in / out movement looking to replace the half shafts and drive flanges as there is some wear between the two but different shaft part numbers quoted depending on whether 2 pin or 4 pin diff eg frc7680 for 2 pin and frc8094 for 4 pin...bit confused.2 or 4 pin diff do you mean if so it wouldnt matter ,and neither does the fact rear half shafts can move in/out
