Hi,
Recentley the rear diff blew on the wife' Freelander 1 (215,000 motaway miles).

When I got it the air, diff was shot to bits, but I also noticed the left rear shaft was out by 3- 4 cm which was allowing oil to leak. I put a low milage second hand diff in, renewed the clips on the end of the safts and put back together...

I have found that the shaft is still popping out of the diff, which allows oil to escape..

So, do I renew the shaft, as it migh be worn, or is it the diff mounts allowing movment,or tyres as suggested in some threads, or Iam I just clutching at straws, and should just renew everthing at the back with that mileage..

Any pointers before its introduced to a box of Swan Vesters :violent: as I;am loosing patience with it.

You shouldn't really get that much movement on the driveshafts if everything is bolted up correctly as the wheel is braced to the subframe at 2 points towards the diff and then one running towards the front of the car.
Did you check the condition of all the diff mounts.
Also what caused your first diff to go fubar?
What mileage has your vcu done and are all your tyres the same make and model with the deepest treaded on the rear
