Rear diff whine maybe?

Got a weird noise coming from my disco. At first I thought it was tyre noise but I've not changed them and it never did it before. Sounds like it could be the rear diff but I'm not sure. It does sound like tyre noise, it's got a rumbly whiny quality that increases with road speed.

Firstly, is there anyway to check where it's coming from? I assume it's hard to pinpoint - it could be coming from any of the drive train components but my guess is it's the rear.
Secondly, if it is the rear diff, will changing the oil help at all? I've never done it before so it is probably due.
Thirdly, is it OK to drive for the time being?

Any advice would be appreciated.

wheel bearings, prop u'js, rear diff should be your things to check.

Don't drive it until you have sorted it. A wheel bearing seizing, prop snapping and diff locking up are all a teeny bit dangerous.

Away from the flying chunks of metal would be my guess!

Well I checked rear diff oil and it was practically empty....weird as there is no leak?!

Still, I've stuck a litre and a bit in of EP80-90 GL4 (all I had lying around) and it's quietened down a bit. Still a bit of a whirr. Drove it down to cornwall and back on a 400 mile round trip and it seems a bit better.
Checked the UJ's and there's no play in them. Had to do a front wheel bearing recently so it could make sense the rear needs doing soon.
