rear diff problem

hi i need help with the rear diff its leaking oil from the seal behind the prop into the diff, o have a kit to replace the sheild and seal but how do you get the dam peg out to remove the rest of it?

is it best to remove the diff 1st or do in place?

if i remove it how do i get it out? and how heavy is it

U have to be inventive to use something instead of the special tools.......then lubricate the new seal with diff oil and do everything "backwords"

Hi did mine a month or so ago, first of all regarding the peg find a large diameter socket or piece of pipe which will cover the diameter of the flange & then using a washer and a m8 set screw draw out the peg. Make sure you lube the seal before fitting & check the axle breather as this tends to make the buggers leak in the first place.
 
i did it today thanks, used a 41mm bi hex socket and some nuts to lift it once the peg was on the move grrrr!

impact gun took the nut out with little effort thank god!

ok pulled out the sheild and found the pinion was sloppy and loose in there is it supposed to be?

cleaned up the surround and removed old seal and then fittted the new one in as best i could, then fitted the new sheild and that stopped the slack there but i did find play in the drive aprox 3=5mm play i take it its not that good?

checked the uj and found a small amount of play and one of the ujs not to be getting grease so i replaced it. on fitting the new one it seems to be very stiff should it be?

rain stopped play so hope to finnish off the job tomorrow will also check the axel breather pipe too

Hi Disc Dude when i removed my oil seal there was a lot of movement in the pinnion which i will keep an eye on as i am not getting any vibration/noise from the rear diff. I not only replaced the seal but whilst i had it all stripped down i replaced the flange as well as there was slight scoring on the old unit part. Regarding the new uj being tight i have no idea as i have never had to replace one again i would grease it & keep an eye on it.
 
thre will be free play with flange removed as you have just taken all loading of taper brearings its free play up/down side to side when flange is tightened down that you worry about ,ujs can be difficult to get right sometimes you need to spread uj using hammer and drift after fitting joint to relieve pressure enough to make it move freely but not loosely ,also check that you havent got a needle resting in end of cap easy done ,feel caps for slight distortion ,when fitting ujs one brg cap should be pushed through enough so that spider sticks out of other side to make sure caps are fitted correctly and needles are strted on spider then push whole lot back to correct position
