Sorry guys, forgot to mention this! Discovered the day before I left for Oxford that the rear diff cover has a hole in it, leaking rather a 'lot' of oil! Decided to risk it and go anyway, and thank goodness, got there and back, even if it was with oil all over the back of Bessie, and all over the horsebox! When my son checked it, the ex. had tried to bodge it with some putty-like nonsense, no surprise there then. So I'm guessing that the sensible thing to do is to replace the diff cover? Do i buy a new one, secondhand, genuine or not? And am i likely to have damaged he diff? Sound like i know what I'm talking about, but I haven't a clue! :wtf: Know how to clonk the starter with hammer when it sticks, and bleed the air out of the injector now and then! I'm learning! Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

new diff cover, old one needs cutting off and new one needs welding on. alternatively the hole could be plated and welded up i suppose if the rest of the cover is sound

Diff should be fine if the oil hasn't completely run out! :)

As above, new cover welded on will sort it!

Thanks guys.
The hole is at the back offside, towards the bottom, so oil running out. Didn't realise it was welded on. My son's going to sort it. Then it's the prop, a good service, and new tyres, well, until the MOT anyway!

Hi
Just to say my son has ordered the cover today, but it's a bolt on, apparently that's the one for my model. So hopefully that'll be done soon.

Stick your head under and look at the diff, if all the bolts are round the front of the diff (the side the prop connects) then it's a standard axle and needs welding on. If the bolts are round the back of the diff then it's a salisbury axle and as you say, bolt on. What vehicle is it?
