Sorry to pee on your fire, but i just had mine done. The bloke has ad's running on ebay under 177flump. 6mm thick with 4mm plate onthe legs & your not going to beat it at £160 all in. All made in his workshop.

Thats ok untill someone runs into the back of you. Then all the force is transfered to the chassis that is forward of the cross member. I know a guy the beefed up the front of his morris miner in this way he had an accident and the whole car twisted.

doesnt quite work like that as the original has no crush points other than the arc of the chassis which will fold in on itself(p38 has), or compare to your beafed up front winch bumper.
Also take a look at your standard x member and towing arrangement with its virtually straight angle iron towing supports.
The 6mm is not to act as a battering ram ,its to allow a completely hollow design with no extra structure so it will twist out and collapse in the event of a very hard impact

You'll find a lot of people here have very different views.
Thanks pressbrake, I'd have no problems passing on your number.

i am about to get my xmember done on my td5 and have been quoted 600plus vat am in high wycombe bucks, anyone know anywhere cheaper within driving distance.

I used Mibcomponents for my rear X member with extensions. I did get it fitted by my mate who's a great welder but it fitted like a dream and looks perfect. I went to pick it up from them and the older chap who makes them is a real fountain of knowledge who you could chat to all day. Top stuff and very highly recommended.

Great thread guys i also looked at mib for a x member they seemed to be the best quality at affordable price but due to some bad luck i didnt have much money so my only option was to make my own i dont have the option of towing due to restrictions on my drivers licsense so i didnt have a need for a tow bar so i made my own way of fastening the rear tub at the bottom and then put a 4 inch tubular bumper on the steel wasnt expensive and i learnt a bit more about working on my landy

i went to this guy yesterday 4/9/11 fantastic job hand made 6mm - lighter than rhe one he took off look up 177flump on ebay, great price and greay workmanship - highly recommended.

Press brake, Looked at your HD 90/110 rear x-members on EBay and toying with gettin one as my main chassis is excellent, how does the x-member allow fitting of the 110 rear tank? are the captive bolts there or will it need the strip cutting off the old x-member and welding on?

Saw your TD5 ad specifically says the bolts are incorporated but no mention on the 110 advert?

Cheers Steve

You should have had a look at mine when you picked up your trailer, Steve.
(Different forum & a different name) Disco 90 george.
It's a u shape that fits over the ends of the rails (that's if they are ok)
If not he cuts back the rails & puts on new sides.

yes i agree with 666 george, clive did my x member 2 weeks ago FANTASTIC JOB, this bloke really knows his job, spent the day there, as 666george says he makes them himself out of 6mm, 177flump, on ebay, try him first, mine went in for MOT today, mechanic commented on what a great x member i had, and how well the welding had been done,

cheers Plod

Hello all, I'm a long-time lurker, first time poster - so sorry if this appears spammy; it's not, just wanted to relay a positive experience.

Having read this thread I decided to give Clive a go and get him to supply and fit a corssmember for my 90. Obviously I was as skeptical as many people are, simply because of the price, but as soon as I got there it became clear that he knows exactly what he's doing and is very skilled at what he does. The crossmembers themselves are sturdy items, but weigh less than a TD5 crossmember and considerably less than my 300tdi's crossmember.

It has to be said that absolutely no corners were cut - the job was done properly and to a very high standard, and if you want peace of mind (or if you've got nothing else to do) you can spend the day watching him work. He built up the chassis ends using new metal, so any rust that was there previously is properly cut out. Even though it turned out to be a pig of a job on my 90, he got on with it all with good humour, and I'd strongly recommend that anybody should consider him when looking for a new crossmember.

For me, it worked out (a lot) cheaper to travel from Birmingham to Essex and back in order to get it fitted, when compared with getting it fitted locally. Like half the price of the other company that everybody recommends. It's a great product at a great price, with great service - can't really ask for any more.

(Just do Clive a favour and try to remove the Waxoil from the rear of your chassis before he gets covered in the stuff!)

Oh, and pictures will follow - at work at the moment, and no internet connection at home because I've just moved house.

Thanks for the nice comments,I just try to be honest with prices and pass on the savings I make by buying metal by the artic load

Here are some photos - this is before I painted it. Surface rust is just the result of a wet journey back from Essex. I'll put some more photos up once I've finished painting it all.

Just wanted to say that I received mine today from Pressbrake. I like it. I sold my Paddocks one, at a loss, but the one from Pressbrake was a lot cheaper than that one was anyway. It comes unpainted, which saves a bit of work stripping the useless paint job off the Paddocks one that they may as well have not bothered it :) I think the fold looks unstressed and the welding looks really nice, unlike the Paddocks one which is quite shocking, made from flimsy metal, and crappy splattery welds that have obviously not been done with any care whatsoever. I'll update with photos when I fit it :D
