hi guys, I’ve got a 300tdi discovery as a tow car, I’ve just noticed I got oil all over rear brake disc , and it’s not brake fluid, any advice is welcome . Thanks

Probably the seal behind the stub axle. This might be it LINKY
Not sure though, so hopefully someone will clarify.

Hub seal.

I would advise you buy a new locktab washer, new stub axle and new Corteco seal, the stub axle is to replace your original as it will most likely have a badly scored seal landing and will just destroy a new seal if you just fit a seal.

Very easy to do.
engage diff lock
jack up and remove road wheel
support on axle stands
Remove the brake caliper
Undo the 5 17mm bolts, pull the rear drive shaft out
Bend back the lock tabs on the locking washer
use a 52mm hub nut socket or box spanner to undo the lock nut and remove the hub nut
Slide the hub off the stub axle and flip it over being careful not to drop the bearings in the muck
Pry the old seal out of the back of the hub
Grease up the outer circumference of the seal and drift it in nice and square and gently

Refit as reverse of removal but you just need to set the wheel bearings up correctly.

hub seal is a grease seal it has no garter spring if oils reaches hub seal breathers blocked or stub axle seals poor or wheel bearings allowing half shaft to move

I pulled out the stub axle oil seals and run oil lubed bearings, no probs in thousands of kilometers of off roading that I've done in it, one of my rear half shafts was actually bent and has never sealed on the raised seal landing on it.

Are you invisible on here? o_O

It's called an oil seal on the defender workshop manual, JM.

?maybe called that but look at one theres no garter spring needed for oil ,there used to be an oil seal used with garter spring prior to hubs using grease and either stud axle oil seal or an outer hub oil seal, meaning inner hub seal isnt needed to cope with oil, if you want hub to cope with oil ftc4785 needs to be changed to rtc3511 a garter spring seal, maxi drive diff lockers used top offer those so oil could be allowed in to the hub so drive member/half shaft splines would get lube

oil is fine for wheel bearings landys used it for years but they changed the seal when they moved to grease and ftc4785 isnt designed to stop oil

I've noticed you never turn up in the 'Members Online Now' panel on the right hand side of the main forum page.
Then your post #4, above, didn't show up as an Alert for this thread. It's like you're invisible

Can't tell looking at the pic on Paddocks, but I'll take your word for it. ;)

I think the alert for your first post on this thread was probably an anomaly, your subsequent posts are coming up on the alert panel.
Can you see yourself in the Members Online Now section?

Ha ha, yes I believe you. Is that the same seal as RTC3511 on the Defender?

was fitted to series and rrc too when oil lubed the wheel bearings, when hubs moved to grease having an oil seal for the inner hub was no longer necessary ,though why they changed is a moot point because ftc4785 isnt cheaper

Ahh, I see in post #7 you've mentioned RTC3511. thought that might be it, but didn't know if the number was the same on the disco axle  Looked it up on Paddocks and got FTC5268G, which I posted the link to.

thats the stub axle seal to keep oil out of the hub,not inner hub seal

That's another £17 in new seals added to the stores and I think I'll order up some new wheel bearings for all 4 corners too :)
