Rear Axle Play Disco

Just been doing the oil levels on my disco and i noticed the rear pads are shot when i removed them i can pull the brake disc towards me and it moves about 15mm each way is this normal ? or do i need to check the rear bearing ? any help would be grateful

Yeah, wheel bearings probably ..

This is from Buster and covers Drum Braked Defenders, but it's almost identical other than you'll have a disc bolted on ...

do you think it might be worth seeing if it will nip up first ?

Yup .. but looking at your motor I'd be inclined to at least take the hubs off and check the bearings for wear and strip/clean them and replace the grease .. water, mud and wheel bearing grease make a nice paste ...
