I have bought a rear audio contol plugged it in it lights up ( so getting power ) plugged headphones in and nothing could it be. Duff being second hand

Could be. Not really something someone can answer on t'internet really. I take it the original one wasn't working. Or did it have one originally? If not, do you have the right head unit? The power source may well be there, knowing Land Rover they might have put the wiring there for every vehicle.

Could be the headphones or corroded connection in jack socket?

Mine didn't come with it as standard but it had the wiring in on one side only the lights work and when you plug headphones in all the other lights lite up

There sending me another one 
My current one doesn't have them, but the last one did. Couldn't use one side, the headphone jack wouldn't go in properly, however hard I pushed. I use the Disco for carrying wheat to feed pheasants and I eventually found a couple of grains of wheat in the socket. By the time I pulled them out, it was a miniature perfectly formed loaf of bread.

I thought these only worked if you had the factory fitted amp and head units.

Mine has the factory Harmon Kardon set up Fitted radio cd / navigation ect

If you have factory navigation it uses the port that would usually run the rear head phones.
