Hey chaps,

I had my instrument cluster out yesterday to try and find the source of a lout vibrating rattle coming from beind the dash somewhere. It happens at about 1700rpm and sounds like its coming from behind instrument cluster. I had it all out including clock, cupholders etc but the rattle still came from beind this lot I think. It seems the resonance of the engine at 1700-200rpm sets it off the loudest. It only started happening the other day after a landrover technician bolted the airfilter housing back on tightly.

Anyone had a similar sound at all from this area and found the source?

much appreciated,

Sounds like something may have been disturbed during filter housing work e.g. there's a small bore metal tube runs up behind the engine from the transmission (breather) it may now be rattling against the bulkhead?

Metal breather clip behind engine on cooling pipe bracket wasn't engaged..now got breather in clip with a bit of a push and about to drive her! Wish me luck!

Hahaha..
Was reading through this post last night, thinking how annoying that would be..
Today i was on motorway and on getting up to 65mph to 70mph this rattle started..
Sounded like a dash rattle but the more i listened it seemed to come more from bulkhead as if something was rattling up against it...Aaaaaaggghhh...Bugger..

If you sort your problem let me know,.I will let you know also..

Check the clips on the metal breather pipes behind air filter first-mine weren't fixed!

Got on my knees in drivers footwell today and rattle is deffo in here somewhere!!!
Grrrr I'd give someone 50quid to find it!

When I first got my Hippo (back in january 2001) I also had such a rattling sound behind the dashboard, this was especially noticed as I came from a Mercedes 190E, being 13 years old and over the 200.000 kms on the clock, it was however very very silent as everything was fixed correctly. In the beginning I searched and searched to get rid of the rattle but over the years and by reading different LR forums I got used to it and can't even imagine anymore how a car, not making a rattle left or right, is........:D:D:D:D

If this little annoyance is all you have to witter about as a Hippo owner, consider you’re self a lucky puppy, but be prepared, there's worse to come. :D:D

i bet the problem is still linked to the air filter housing in engine compartment, search thoroughly inside and out, freel 2 is good at rattling behind the dash and it iusually the front wing vibrating on the base of the windscreen pillar.
