first post, gonna be whiping out the 3.5 efi out a 89 classic auto and making it into a 4.0 strait 6 diesel manual using a toyota lancruiser, pics and stuff will be following for people who wish to take on this conversion.
gear box will stay landrover, for the short term will be on a LT77 unless i come across a R380 being the stronger upgrade,
please take a peek at what i posted in this secshun earlier "parts id needed" please as am stuck with not knowing what this box is from and what it is.
shed loads of spares up for grabs from a full 3.5 efi lump on only 60k with recent heads gasket and skim, air flow meteres, gas conversion kit, auto box, set of carbs on inlet manifold, all engine ancilleries so on and so forth unless i change my dutton pheaton phase 2 from a ford to rover lump but untill then its up for grabs. first progress pics will be up tomorrow chaps!!
enjoy! :D

Hi there, this sounds like a fun project!
it says that you want an R380. what is that? i know its a gearbox, but dont know which one!

i have a 3 spd auto from a classic with all the bits and bobs in my garage, dont suppose thats an R380 is it?

CURLY

thats right, the td5 version does have a longer layshaft, yer the R380 is the 300tdi version.
work has commenced, a day down the garage and this is the result...
this it the rangie in question

next up is to get some mounts for the lt77 manual box to fit it first, drop the toyoa engine in to measure where the origion rangie mounts need to be moved to, practise session tells us its 3 1/4 inch forward but it doesnt hurt to get the engine mounted to the box when thats fully mounted to give a more accurate measurment.
once measured the fromt cross member will have to get a chunk grinded out the front as it looks like there isnt enought room for the front crank pully as its a strait 6 as opposed to a shorter v8.
but and weld engine mounts, fit a manual peddal box as it was an auto. create wiring loom and vroom vroom!!! the engine is aledgedly 115bhp and 185 lbs per square ft of tourqies, it did fly in the land cruiser and would leave my 200tdi behind so i should be a goodun with possablity to add a turbo in the near future to 155 bhp and 225 lbs. plus racing (probably ram air) induction and no exauste restriction.
enjoy pics boys!

haha just noticed the exhauste, must have beent he engle of the pic, it does site tight up and flush that, well in the flesh at least. did sound nice with a v8 though and no silencers!!!

managed to find after 3 attempts, a crossmember to fit the manual box on this chassis, proper ball ache, anyway, gearbox all cleaned up, fluids changed and fitted, pics will follow, will be poor quality as i used my phone but you will all get the jist of things!

heres those pics i promised, regarding the gearbox/chassis cross member it needs to be moved forward and you will only 3 of the 4 holes either side on the chassis on a pre 90 model range rover, 3 is a suffiecient amount but it didnt hurt to drill a forth, if anybody wants any close ups then feel free to ask. just the manual pedal box to fit and clutch master cylinder over the next few days.

Nice to see someone else going with the Jappy solution, my six cylinder Nissan motor is very good, mine's bolted to an old LT95 box with overdrive. Been a PITA job recently as some numpty had filled the box with EP90 at some time and goosed the oil pump, so layshaft bearings went home. Just found a good replacement box and we are all singing again.
I reckon a six sounds just as good as the V8 when on full noise !

feck me chris talk about jap powered, just saw your list of motors!
this was far cheaper than a 200tdi lump plus the pull it gave was outstanding. with the tyres i just put on and that grunt in low range, providing the diffs dont catch it should get up anything. (i Hope).
engine mounts ground off today lads and engine fitted, ball ache!!, pics will follow, chassis had to be cut away on the front crossmember and a new one fitted further forward behind the bumper mounting points.

:) Yea I like the Jappy diesels, they stick together a bit better than tdi's in my opinion. You can buy them for peanuts as well, parts are easy but you rarely need them.

I bought the Nissan engined one already converted but not very well done, have had to tidy all the wiring up as it was a mess, engine and mechanics good though, just one noisy injector to sort. It went over Gatescarth easily during the summer and I just love the exhaust note of a six. Latest addition is the Daihatsu engined one, bought complete for next to nothing just needs the gearbox sorting, viscous has seized and taken something out I think the chain in the BW transfer. Got another good one anyway so could have a runner on the road for £350.00 Can't be bad :) :)
