Hi Everyone.
My Td6 was running cool with the coolant temperature running just on the top of the blue position about 10 o’clock so I figured main thermostat (had the same problem on my Z3 and replacement stat sorted the issue)
So today with a free weekend and the mrs away Christmas shopping in Bath I thought I would bite the bullet and replace the main stat.
A fun filled day it has been.
The hardest part was getting the viscous fan off and then the rest was methodical with dismantling of the egr to get to the thermostat (changed the main egr assembly with the blanking off kit my thinking well it’s apart anyway)
Anyway drained all the antifreeze from the rad and the block and removed the old stat cleaned up the old surface which was caked in instant gasket popped the new one and reassembled again found it hard to get the fan back on.
Filled with antifreeze and ran the car and guess what it stays at the same position needle at the top of the blue.
Heater is throwing out warm air but not hot.
I believe there are 3 thermostats on the Td6?
The main one and the one on the top is the egr but is there another?
Guessing it’s one of these other two stats but can anyone point me at the likely culprit or could it be something else?

Did you see the bleed screw ?

Some air in the system can make it blow warm rather than hot ...

Have you tested the fan ?

It’s done 170,000
If the water pump was failing to work correctly would it not run hot?
Does the egr not have a thermostat ?

Yes, the whole piece has the thermostat inside.

Worth looking at the BMW variant of the EGR thermostat (referred to in RAVE as the Thermal valve (EGR), under Emission Control) for TD6, as it's much cheaper than LR...

Update...replaced the torpedo shaped egr thermostat above the viscous fan and now the needle rises to the usual BMW centre point on the temperature gage.
Maybe I should have replaced that first but when I changed the main stat I drained and replaced all the coolant so not that fed up.
Thanks all for the pointers

Glad it's sorted and you can enjoy the weather ... :D
