Range Rover P38 'Trek' - what is it? (Pic)

Just come across this vehicle, which looks to be exactly what I'm looking for...but £18,500 for a P38, seriously??



Anyway, just wondering what the Trek was - I don't think it was an official LR product from Special Vehicles, but if this is true, who built them?

Also, the advert claims this is the only RHD model made - sound correct? The spec reads as follows:

The only RHD one built. 2000 model, 4 litre petrol with Bosch engine management, Romano Direct Injection LPG Gas Conversion (135 litres), WARN CE XD9000 winch (unused), KONI Adjustable Shockers, Air Con, Towbar, GoodYear Wrangler ATR Tyres(16") also original Hurricane 18" wheels and tyres, Full Roof Rack with rear ladder, 6 Front Spots, 2 Rear Spots, Hands Free Nokia system, Seat Covers, Overmats, Dog Guard, Removable Spare Wheel Carrier in boot, 1st Aid Kit, Fire Extinguisher, Light Guards. I googled Range Rover Trek and found them but they were yellow with the 4.6 engine and built by Land Rover Special Vehicles group for the Trek competition in Vermont so can,t see why one would be RHD and 4.0, Anyway someone might come up with more info.

Think the includes original 18" wheels and tyres maybe a give away. Looks like maybe someone has done a copy. Thing is if you bought a 4.0 litre Rangie for £2000.00 and fitted all the accessories would they add up to £16,500.00. Making it an £18,500.00 car. I think not.

Isn't your example a bit late to have taken part in the TReK event anyway?

I lent my RR book out to someone this weekend, but from (wholly crap!) memory I thought the TReK event was to commemorate the centenary of someone climbing a hill/mountain in America around 1897 - RR got involved in an overland competitive TReK to celebrate this and so it would have been roughly 1997, 3 years before your target car was registered.

Simple Google tells the tale. Trek Range Rover was a special edition for US market in 1997. So the one advertised is a later copy of that vehicle. A fake in other words.

TReK Edition: Approximately 20 of the TReK Range Rovers were built by the Land Rover Special Vehicles Group for the 1997 Land Rover TReK competition in Vermont. This was not an official special edition, but many of the former competition models have been sold to private parties. The 1997 TReK competition was the second in a series of TReK events (the first TReK competition was in Georgia and used Discovery Series Is) sponsored by Land Rover North America that allowed LRNA dealership (aka 'Land Rover Centre") employees to learn about the vehicles while competing with the employees of other dealerships in "Camel Trophy Type" special tasks. The TReK Range Rovers were all based on NAS spec AA Yellow Vitesse Edition Range Rover 4.6 HSE models (see above for more information on the Vitesse Edition). Like the Vitesse the TReK Edition also had ash black leather seats with yellow piping and yellow mirrors. They also had the entire bumpers painted yellow and 18 inch "Triple Sport" three spoke wheels with yellow painted centers. The triple sport wheel was never used on a Range Rover model sold in the US, but it has always been available as an option through the Land Rover dealers. The models all had the factory roof rack (with rear ladder), yellow painted lamp guards, winch kit and extensive under body armor from the Special Vehicles Group. For some reason Land Rover did not install heavy duty bumper or sill protectors (aka "Rock Sliders") on the vehicles. Land Rover did paint the grey plastic bumpers, door bump strips and door sills bright yellow so even slight damage was more obvious. The official TReK modes had a decal kit with a big "Vermont 97" on the sides and "TReK '97" on the tailgate. The models also had American flag stickers on the fenders (wings) like the Camel Trophy Range Rovers and sponsor stickers that included BF Goodrich and Warn. Yeah I had found the info on the yellow US ones but wondered what the deal with the orange UK car was - there's a few other orange ones on google images, but cant find much info on them. I am guessing not everyone wants a bright orange and black P38 for fun?? For example:



My rough translation of the French behind that image is that they were build by LR SVD in Solihull for a TreK expedition through South Africa, and it mentions LR employees too. Sounds like a mini-G4 Challenge type event to me!

Anyone know any more?

No not me. But at £18,500.00 for a maybe if you were that way inclined at tops £5000.00 car i don't really want to know any more.

Don't worry wammers, I've absolutely no inclination to buy that car whatsoever - certainly not for £18,500! For about £3-£5k more you can pick up a genuine G4 Range Rover or Range Rover Sport, so whoever is selling this is in a dream world.

I just like the idea of a kitted out P38 and wanted to know a bit more about where these ones came from!

There only needs to be one idiot though. So i suppose it's worth listing just in case someone who is recieving care in the community just won the lottery.

Haha, I actually just rang the guy out of curiosity and apparently that website is many years old, but they've lost contact with the company hosting it and can't take it offline! Very odd!

Anyway, looks like that price of £18,500 was several years ago, which explains a lot.

Still quite fancy one, if I found one at the right price.

It'a a Safety Devices rack I believe, not sure if they still make/stock them?

Predominantely the horrendous fuel consumption! I enjoyed doing stuff to it anyway, it was a bit rough round the edges when I got it so I quite enjoyed bringing it back to a decent state and getting it running nicely, but it was the worst vehicle on fuel I'd ever driven - was getting 11mpg on my run to work! Which meant I was never going to drive it anywhere to be honest.

Was still a lovely car though, and simply superb in the snow!
