Hi all, I am new to the Land Rover sceen and have just bought my first, a Range Rover 2.5 DSE Auto on an R plate.
So far I am delighted with it and am also enjoying the Landyzone Forum which is full of useful info.
My question is, when I bought my P38, there was only one central locking hand set and I am concious of loosing it.
My Land Rover dealer can supply one at about £150 plus a fee for programming.
I can also buy one on ebay at a fraction of the cost but can they be re programmed for different vehicles.
Does anyone have any ideals to help this middle aged Landy Virgin out, or should I just make sure I don't loose the only handset.

hi, a company called remote key ltd will do you a replacement key/remote for £70,although they are non original they are ok as a spare, sadly they only operate in the midlands so you may have to take car to them, hope this helps.

£150 plus a fee for progamming the key, I've just got a new key and fob from my local L/R dealers £118 and they programmed it for me for free, and they checked it was working properly before I left.

Don't forget to check the number of the key you have as only one key of each number will work.

ie if you have a number one then a number two will work but if you buy a second number one only one of them will work.

The keys are slightly different in colour, and if you have memory seats only 1 and 2 will operate the memory.

Look for a recent thread to help you decide which one you have.

Regards Fred

Remote Key Limited - Range Rover P38 key fob

But I have to say DO NOT BUY ANY KEY from them. It has been asked before and they use an RF Data receiver to retrieve your key fob signal. This is how thieves steel cars.

Each P38 Range Rover can only have two keys synchronised to your BECM at any one time for security reasons. If you add another key, one of the keys will drop off the system.

Yes OK the official key sets are expensive, so are all other car handsets that are similar in the way RR ones are i.e. BMW's, Volvo, Saab's and Mercs etc etc etc

The handsets are created in Germany by BMW and take about 5-10 working days to arrive.....normally in a few days from my experience.

They need your cars using your VIN and proof of ownership of course.

You have been warned.

This is not the case!

There is a total of 4 remote fobs available for range rovers, the colours are
No1 Ash grey
No2 black
No3 beige

i got a replacement number 1 key from landrovers a year ago for £113 inc vat, supplied, programed and checked to see if it worked too!
took 3 or 4 days i think!
once a key fob has been programed it cant be done again so it is useless for any other R/R, DONT buy from anywhere else but LR

Thanks to all of you who have replied. Clearly I need to shop around the LR dealerships for a better price than Hartwells in Oxford are quoting.

i used Lookers of Hadliegh! 01702 559933 if its any use to you, not round the corner though!

I have all key fob numbers and they are all black! they certainly are not what that guy says!

I bought the wife a replacement not so long ago and its a 3......and its black not beige as you suggest.

These additional colours of blue and beige are all a myth....I have the fobs to prove this statement wrong.

Yes I bought mine from Beadles my local official LR dealer.....also the car came with all four keys numbered 1-4 and all are black.

Someone did claim, not sure if I read it here or not, that the additional colours were made for a different market other than the UK and some were sold in the UK by mistake.
