What is the Lucas additive?
I've just dipped the gearbox using the correct method. It is below the minimum mark. I'm going to top it up...

Will ordinary tranmission fluid do or is there a special type?

Any ATF that meets the spec will do. Only top it up with gearbox oil cold.

From the Handbook....

Don't just top it up, if it's been running with low oil, the oil will be cooked. Drain and re-fill and it would be a good idea to do the filter in case it's full of crap.
When you drain it, look at the colour of the oil, cherry red = OK, dark brown or black = box on it's way out:eek:

On the dipstick the oil is red and does not smell burnt...
Sure if I top it wont do any harm I think because;

either
1/ the gearbox for gone, so it will eventually fail anyways

2/ the oil is going and topping it up will get rid of the problems.

Would this be a correct way of looking at the current situation?

The dribble on the end of the dipstick, won't give a good clear indication as it will be quite a thin layer and will look clean....

If it doesn't smell burnt you could be ok, I would rather drain it all and replace that way you know it is clean and fresh.....

It's supposed to be changed every 30K miles. Cheaper than a new box:rolleyes:

Well, the gearbox gave up last night. I did top the oil up however the damage I believe was already done. The starting part of the auto box failed. For instance once its up to speed it drives perfect...

Looks like a new gearbox for me! :(

Sorry to hear that dude....

Dont worry, I knew just topping it up was too good to be true.
I floored it and bang. Was testing it out you know? awful grinding noice. Smells of burning too, like clutch... hardly moves and then other times it moves perfect.

Will try and get it replaced quickly....
