Hello,
I was driving my RR when all of a sudden I heard a pop. Then their was no drive in D, 3 and 2. Gearbox works in reverse. The gearbox changes into low, and the same only R and 1....

it revs as if it is in netural.

What could the problem be?

check fluid colour on the dipstick it is blackened does it smell burned?
sounds like new gearbox time to me as you are only getting first and reverse.
have you tried pulling away in first then changing manually up to 2nd then the same to 3rd and eventually into drive?
if you read ashcroft transmissions website and it does the above it is time for a gearbox!

You should maybe drain a bit from the sump, my disco looked ok on the dipstick, i drained some off n that was black as fook, but tbh id say its a dead un :(

Sounds like a failed clutch pack to me. No amount of wishing, smelling, praying or revving is going to fix it I'm afraid. I would speak to Ashcroft transmissions.

After the car has sat for the night, when one puts it into D and revs but moves very slowly. I'm thinking clutch pack too? however what part of the setup is this in? Is it part of the main gearbox?

Will the gearbox from a 4.0/4.6 litre fit the jeep? She is a 2.5 Diesel.

I've seen a newer Range Rover with the same problem. Will the gearbox from the 4.0/4.6 fit my 2.5?
THanks

The box from the 4.0 will fit (ZF4HP22) but you will have to change the bell housing.
I have a theory that the box from the 4.6 (ZF4HP24) might fit, the spacer between the box and the transfer box would have to be from the 4.6 and again the bell housing would have to be changed.
When my box finally fails I will try it.:)
James martin or bemble are the autobox experts.

Sorry I'm not to ups on all the terms. When one says the bell housing? Can that part be taken off my current gearbox? what exactly is a bell housing?

Sorry but if you don't know what a bell housing is, I don't think you should look at a DIY box change. Yes you use the one from your old box, it's the large bell shaped alloy casting between the engine and gearbox, it houses the flywheel/torque convertor.

Hello,
This evening I went to the car and again no drive in any gear except 1st and Reverse. However once I got going a began to change up manually something which I didnt expect happened. It changed up perfect and has been working perfect since in all gears.

How can this be?

it's just p38 magic.:eek::D:D

To be honest I dont really trust this 'p38 magic'! :D

I wonder could it just be the oil needing change? I'm afraid to floor it because I reckon it would then fail again? I'm just trying to figure out if I need a new gearbox or can It be saved?

The sprag clutch has failed, pull away in first then whack it into drive and it will go:eek: Have you checked the oil level is Ok and by the correct method?
If the oil level is OK then I would guess you need to budget for a re-con gearbox from Ashcroft transmissions:) Or ask James martin to re-build it:)

Yes, I understand the correct method. However this is the way it currently seems to work. For instance now it works perfect starting in D. However it woulld not have until I started in first.

have to buy second hand gearbox. The first has failed.

Sorry I'm just after re-reading your post.
I misunderstood it...

what is the correct method for the checking the oil level in the gearbox?

Regards.

Depends on Year....

Pre a certain year with a dipstick under the bonnet...

FROM COLD - Start engine and leave to idle, cycle the gears one by one from P through to 1 then back to N| and check level.

Post a certain year without dipstick...

FROM COLD - Start engine and leave to idle, cycle through the gears one by one from P to 1 and back to N then with engine still running, get under vehicle and take the level plug out and check the level.

GET THIS CONFIRMED AS IT IS FROM MEMORY...

Seeing it is working again by magic,it may be worth while trying some of the Lucas magic gearbox additive:D:D:D

As above but if it is working again, I'd do an oil and filter change before adding Lucas Transmission Fix. The book calls for an oil change every 30K miles, if the oil looks black, the gearbox is on it's way out:eek:
