This is my first post here, so apologies if this has been covered before.

Firstly, hello all!

I have a problem with my 2000 P38 4.6 Vogue. It's also LPG converted.

It overheats intermittently, then the temp will drop back down again (we haven't been driving it far, but it'll drop back down again before we find a place to stop). There's also an intermittent 'clunk' from kind of behind the stereo. There's a slight coolant leak when it gets hot - my hubby says that the ?overflow?, and if he tries filling the tank with the engine running (from cold) it bubbles out all over the place.

Yesterday, my husband filled up the coolant, and took it for a little run to try to get to grips with the problem, and there was a loud clunk, and it hasn't overheated since, but he's still not happy with it. Before I take it in and sign a blank cheque, has anyone any ideas?

(could you also bear in mind I'm only a girl with basic mechanical knowledge, so keep it down to basics for me :p )

Thank you

no seriously, you need to search the forum for overheating there are several reasons, because its bubbling out from cold then i would suggest you get a hydrocarbon test done, this will point to either liner slip or head gasket trouble if it comes up positive.

if negative you will probably find the vapouriser needs repairing or replacing. if you can find a replacement, new, it should only be around 60-80 quid - that depends on type etc.

i know your a girl but maybe your hubby can locate the lpg tanks and turn them off, there should be a small valve, turn it off and run the gas out of the line by starting the car and flicking to lpg, once its stalled it should be empty. now get him to see if the bubbles are still there.

if they are not and it doesnt o/heat whilst running on petrol then your in luck!!!

the clunking could be unrelated, i suspect it is but on the other hand it could be the liners moving, bad situation as this means new engine needed!

your post is vague as there are so many things it could be thats is causing both faults. ive tried to give a few of the common ones and if you can get the lpg test above done first and post back, it'd help to get the h/carbon test done too but post after lpg has been turned off!

dont use it for long runs yet as any overheating could ruin the engine beyond repair!!

if you hadnt mentioned the coolant spewing out i would suggest cleaning earth connections to body engine and battery but it wont be that.

good luck and :welcome2:

Thanks for the replies. I called the RAC out today as it overheated on the way to mum's. The loud clunk was the upper rad hose splitting - he replaced that and ran it for a good 15 minutes without problem. He thought it was an airlock, which had found its way to the hose which was on its way out, and blown its way through.

Then on the way home it overheated again, but no more clunking sounds and no coolant leak on stand-still (or moving). We can switch the lpg off inside the car - will that help with your suggestion?

This might be completely random, but can a cat on its way out cause overheating?

I think it might be time for the garage. :(

cat should not be the problem. it has just taken me 2 weeks to get all the air out of mine, it can be a royal pain in the arse banging away. i would start with cap off ticking over and filling up slowly, make sure you have water flow from top of rad [small pipe] turn heaters on hot full all the time. best of luck. j

yes flys up befor i took it to anybody, make sure you got all air out. mine blew top pipe and it was air. update where you are you may get offer of help to bleed it. j

On the Wirral. The RAC guy did say it was a bugger to drain, and that we need to get someone who knows what they're doing to put coolant in - it's only got water at the mo.

i may be able to get over later in the week if you need help if you want somebody faster i have a guy i have used for odd jobe in b/head who is very good
