Hi Rover here, i have a couple of problems,which might or might not be related.
A number of months ago,i noticed that my tyres were scrabbling when i was turning a tight corner,after reading the forum i believe i may have a seized viscous coupling,now i have found that i have lost drive to the front diff,prop is turning but no drive.
First of all,how important is the viscous coupling,and if i do not get it changed/repaired,what are the likely consequences?
Can i run the vehicle without fear of any further probs?
How much will a new/2nd hand one cost,and how easy/difficult is it to replace,hours required fo completion of job?
The front diff,i presume a half shaft spline has sheared,or, if the coupling has died,does that mean that drive to the front axle is now non existant,and my half shafts may be ok.
Any suggestions, or ideas to solve these probs,will be much appreciated.

If you put your location you might get a better response. Is it a P38? If the front prop is turning but you have no drive, the front diff is shot. A seized viscous coupling will break the diff, so that is probably the cause.
You can run with the front prop removed without doing more harm if the VCU has seized. You can check if the VCU is seized by putting a bar on the front prop coupling at the transfer box with the prop removed, you should be able to turn it with a great effort. If it does not turn the VCU is seized.

As you lot know MY VC has seized ..I've been running with my front Prop removed for over a week now ... With no probs at all .. I will "Get Round" to fitting the new VC after Easter (Was going to do it THIS WEEK but as usual its rained that much here I'd have to wear SCUBA GEAR to get under the damn thing!!!!)

I wonder if you can enlighten me as to what is involved with changing a viscous coupling,including,time involved and rough idea of cost of parts.
Where are you based,i am in Ireland at the moment but into Oswestry,tomorrow morning for a week.

About £300.00 for the coupling. And 40 mins to an hour to fit on a ramp, on yer back a bit longer. + fluid to refill box.
