Last edit of this info: 15 June 2016. The little did I know when I got it ha!
  • Last Sunday I picked up my new pride and joy the mighty Land Rover Range Rover Vogue TD6 2003. It has roughly 100k on the clock and it is in a stunning condition. Comes with a full dealer service history and I'm the 4th owner.
  • The car also has been facelifted by Clarks Premier Bespoke to the 2010-2012 Autobiography exterior look using the genuine parts.

I opened the thread to keep a journal of its journey under my ownership.

Features and technical data:

  • Engine: BMW M57 Straight-6 3.0 Diesel getting about 30mpg. I will update my fuelly.com soon so will track and post fuel usage.
  • Gearbox: The Cheese GM5L40E 5-Speed Piece Of $h17.
  • Interior color code: (?) To be updated.
  • Bodywork paint code: (?) To be updated.
  • Car came with a NavTrak tracker which is handy and should lower the insurance premium although it isn't too bad for me since I'm 25. (26 now :) )
  • Boot is equipped with an amplifier and 12" subwoofer which sounds quite nice although I am not sure if the rest of the speakers have been changed. - Drains my old battery!
  • It is equipped with a Parrot CK3000 Evolution hands-free system.
  • The standard RR SatNav.

Here is a list of fixes to be done:

I have few diagnostic tools like Autoboss V30, Delphi VCI (various versions) and many more OBD2 interfaces and software. In terms of literature I got well you guys here at LZ and Autodata, RAVE etc.

  • Gearbox service - oil, filter, gasket - Gearbox is okay at the moment but it's better be safe than sorry. - That was done but since then the gearbox decided to fail. I'm rebuilding it now.
  • The power fold mirrors seem to be damaged inside. When I press the button the N/S mirror folds and the motor keeps going even when folded and it doesn't fold back out. O/S doesn't fold at all just makes the noise. Both mirrors seem to be freely pivoting on the mount so definitely need attention.
  • Intermittent "Transferbox Neutral" message on the dash pops up with the chime. The transfer box might be sticking so will have to attend that e.g. oil replacement, filter replacement, motor replacement or might be as simple as cleaning the corroded connectors. Got RAVE to introduce me to the whole thing. Exploded view will be handy since my dad can rebuild these things easy. - Cleaning the carbon track potentiometer and the connector done the job.
  • It needs a touch up here and there on the paint due to chips etc. Nothing major and still in a VGC after 14 years! Full detail required.
  • Rear wiper works although the screen wash doesn't seem to flow into it so will have to investigate it. Unless there is a separate tank in the back. Again as a newbie I need to go and figure it out. - That is damaged and needs replacing but I don't go anywhere near the stalk to squirt the rear window otherwise it leaks inside.
  • The passenger central lock inside the door doesn't open. - Changed the door catch and things work a dream.
  • The steering rake/rack electric adjustment goes up and down but not backwards and forwards. You can hear it moving the motor but the wheel stays still. It also has a play in the rake/rack up and down which has to be addressed ASAP since this is a MOT failure. - FIXED
  • The descent switch has been snapped so will have to source the replacement. Hard to find a replacement for the switch, while the full assembly is available. Doesn't bother me that much anymore.
  • The dot-matrix pixel display is missing some lines so will address that too to restore it to it's former glory.
  • Side step seems to have a slight crack in it. Will fill it and paint over it.
  • Drivers seat is a bit tired and will receive a new lease of life with some Autoglym and Meguiars products as well as some leather dye I managed to trace here. Will post pictures before and after. The plastic trim seems to have a crack in it so will also get replaced.

Here is a list of mods to be done:

  • New head unit with satellite navigation to revamp the interior and to get it to match the nice looks outside.
  • While cleaning I discovered front cameras in the bumper which I would like to connect to the new head unit.
  • Reverse camera - preferably a wireless one which fits into the number plate light making it a hybrid insert.
  • The wheel nuts, disks and calipers will get some new paint on them since they look old and rusty. Perhaps wheel nut covers. I could go get the fake BREMBO caliper covers on eBay but I don't think I will perform this cheese on my car. ;)
  • Get new hub and valve caps.
  • Install rim protectors.
  • Piano black interior trim wrap all round.
  • Get some carpet mats for the summer.
  • Replace the existing foglights in the bumper with LED DRL ones but not cheese looking ones with half of LEDs dead.
  • Full LED conversion of the interior lighting including the footwells, sun visors etc.
  • Fit the doors with Land Rover logo repeater/projectors. Not quite sure how I feel about them but will give it a go. Always wanted to see how they look.
  • Change the front ashtray to a cupholder.
  • Wrap the mirrors in piano black.
  • Fit led arrow lights behind the mirror glass.
  • Fit new Bosch AeroTwin wiper blades and treat the screen with glass polish, clay, RainX etc. Proper refurb.
  • Paint the side vents black.
  • Replace the lettering on the bonnet to "ARMOURED".
  • Get some new keyrings, perhaps update the keys. - Got the keyrings and just key casings but need them cut.
  • Fit aluminium pedals (with taste) from either the RR Sport or Supercharged.
  • I found a sticker that refreshed look of the gearbox legend below the shifter so will get that too.
  • Upgrade the sticking tailgate button.
  • Change the reverse light bulbs to LED.
  • Change the lighting in the mirrors to LED.
  • Fit anti-crash rear end laser warning. Never tried it before again curious.
  • Fit the rear headrests with screens and install either XBOX or PlayStation in the car for the entertainment. Maybe a dome screen from the ceiling or big TV in the boot.
  • New private plate. - Done.
  • If I'm brave enough I will attempt changing the entire dashboard lighting from green to white.
  • Change full beam to HID/Xenon/White light bulbs.

I just downloaded some version of RAVE and will start reading up on where to start. My father is a car mechanic so he will help me with putting things right while I do the computer side of things and update this thread on regular basis.

Since I'm a hobbyist detailer/valeter I will attend the car properly when is a little bit warmer to work on it to give it a full body decontamination with clay and cleanser, polish it with diamond compounds and resin then cover the whole thing in premium wax. :) I will post a video of the big wash!

I hope you enjoy the thread as I progress through it! Will update before and after pictures.

Your car looks almost like for like - looks great!

The art is not having deep pockets but using what you know and can do to your advantage. :)

At the moment I'm enjoying the motoring and just discovering what's what.

The main box or the transfer box or both @martynv8 ? I checked the pressures on the solenoids all seem to work fine.

Is there something I should know before I go :screaming_bug_eye_f ?

Or should I list it for sale already? :)

@2.0_hippo what engine do you have?

Regards,

Jake

gearbox's are famous for failing at around 100k and cost circa 2.5k to refurb, just hope yours has had regular oil changes, if it's been dealer serviced i doubt it though, land rover specify 150k to change oil, by which time most gearboxs have failed long before

Mine is also a TD6

Year older than yours, 2002 with 165k miles on her

Last month just had a recon box fitted.
Gearbox didn't go completely, TQ was starting to wear causing vibrations. So got the whole box overhauled whilst it was open

I just got a 100k. So I should be fine going forward. I will service the box soon. I doubt I will keep the car until 165k. ;) What does TQ stands for? Did you mean Torque Converter? How much did it cost you to do the box?

TQ is the torque converter for those of us who are cant be bothered to type it out :D

The GM box on the diesel will eat themselves, it is not a case of 'if' but 'when'.

100k on original fluid will be a ticking timebomb....change fluid and filter and check the condition of it as it will be telling.

Haha well that fills me with faith. It has FSH from Land Rover. I will give them a call to ask about it. How much does it usually cost to get a replacement? And/or how much is refurb?

Regards,
Jake

I just turned 109K the other day so I've got a way to go I hope! Gearbox likes to throw the odd judder when in auto but smooth as silk in manual so i'll be eeking that out as long as I can. Oils and filters changed about 500 miles ago and when the front diff was being changed by the indy Landy garage, they said I should be fine as long as the oil was changed and has a FLRSH. It does but we'll see ......

We can only hope. I got the exploded view diagram in the RAVE so I will just rebuilt it with my dad. Gearbox does not judder or gives any problems for now - touch wood. I'm enjoying the car a lot. I have a 2012 Mercedes but I kinda enjoy riding the Range more.

Well once it goes you have nothing to lose. :) May as well jack it up and rip it out then dig inside. Find some part numbers during the autopsy etc. The only tricky part can be the programming if necessary but everything is possible. If/when I get round to ripping that box apart I will post some kind of guide. I assume they all go for the same reason.

gearbox rebuild is in the region 2.5k most failiures are caused by either the oil not being changed often enough (bmw seem to think the units are sealed for life) and the other issue is the gear box oil cooler gets clogged up. it runs off the bottom rows of the radiator below where the main engine coolant pipe returns to the engine. the result it all the crud and crap in the cooling system settles in the bottom of the rad blocking the coolant flow to the cooler.

my 2.5k rebuild included a new larger gearbox oil cooler mounted on the front of the radiator.

gearbox rebuild is in the region 2.5k

Hopefully the £230+ I spent a few months ago on that fancy oil should buy me some time and miles then. I was a tad shocked at the cost of it but putting it alongside your £2.5k it's not looking that bad

Mind you, put that next to the £500+ for the alternator and new battery, £1200+ for the front diff and labour, £535 for repairs to rear brakes, £60 for sensors and labour and it adds up! Only had it since September!!!! :lalala:
