The symptoms: The clock only works when the ignition is on. The reversing lights and diff lock warning light don't work at all and the interior (courtesy lights) only work when the ignition is on.
My interpretation: These all seem to be fed directly from the battery (bypassing the ignition switch) or both by the direct feed and the the ignition switch.
Also, the ammeter doesn't ever register anyting but straight down the middle but I'm not surte that all these things are related.
Does anyone have any idea where the fault is?

Hmmmm thats sounds a little wierd. It sounds as though the items which should be fed 12v straight from the battery are being directed though the ignition??????????

Could it be that you have a bad earth on this system and you are only getting an earth when you switch on the ignition??

Loking at the witing diagram, the clock and the courtesy lights should work with or without the ignition switch turned on but they only work with it on. I.e. the coutesy lights don't come on when I open the doo and the clock only starts up again when the ignition is switched on.

Could be a poor earth somewhare but I haven't tracked it down yet.

Could aslo be that the fedd that comess to these items is broken but I can't work out which one it is (I can on the diagram but not when I look at the actual witing loom)

Have a look at the fuses. Its easy to get them in 'crossed' so that the link is actualaay between two other circuits. Might effectively break the constant live for the instrument feed, and make it through a switched feed.
Wont say for sure, but the fuse boxes are a bit wriggly and it can happen, and its best to start with the simple stuff first before ripping the dah out!
