Hi All

I know you mainly cover P38's, but I have an enquiry more on the L322.

Basically, what is the best diagnostic software for these cars?

We have found [FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif][SIZE=-2][FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif][SIZE=-1]AutoEnginuity but having spoken to one of their distributors they are not at all good for the diesels as their main company is USA based and they don't have many (any??) diesel RR's there. Petrol coverage seems excellent, and the package comes in at under £400.

I also saw the Hawkeye handheld unit, which seems decent but you cannot control or program any modules with it. But for scans it would do the job.

What we ideally would like is a PC based software package that is near dealer-level and covers petrol and diesel models.

We're trade and don't mind spending a few hundred £'s, but not into four figures!!!

Anyone here got any experience with diagnostic packages for RR's? Any recommendations??

Think you will be looking a long time to find dealer level diagnostics for all models for less than four figures. Land rover diagnostics is sewn up as tight as a drum. Mainly because Land rover choose to make it so complexed and difficult to access. Dealership only seemed to be their goal. BBS is very good but not in anyway cheap. Talk to Colin on here,(BBS guy).
He may be felling christmasy.
But don't hold your breath.

Tried contacting their official UK supplier (RPi Engineering) but the chap is too busy working on a car to take my call or call me back. Only been waiting three hours :(

Hopefully I'll get to speak to him eventually.

Anyone have any experience with the Hawkeye unit? Any good??

Check it out but it seems a lot cheaper to deal direct with BBS than RPI.
 
If you post up where you are based you may find there is a local indy that will do it for you at a trade rate.Blackbox stuff is not really aimed at trade - Omitec or Autologic are where you should be looking if you want to do daily stuff with it.There are about 10 local LR indies close to me that just ask me to do all their diagnostics.i dont charge them very much but its regular work and not worth them buying the kit.

I totally disagree.
BBS gear is used by many trade users world wide, as can be seen by their forum & member database. It has a greater capability than Autologic and Test Book if the correct software is installed.
Be advised that it is not just a DIY piece of kit.
Unless you have first hand knowledge of the system, don't knock it.

I have worked with Test Book and Autologic and found them to be very restrictive compared to Faultmate/Rovacom with the correct software.
 
I'd also second Autologic but not cheap, about 5 grand per marque and you can (if you chose) get merc, bmw, VAG and some others coverage as well. Have also heard of an outfit called Texa but don't know much about them. They have a website but its not very informative. Maybe call them?

Funny thing is I do have first hand knowledge of the system,and its very extensive capababilities,but I also know around a hundred garages who regularly carry out diagnostic work on LR rubbish.Funny thing is not one of them has a BBS product,lots of other kit from Snap on etc - which are coming on well in their previously limited coverage,so much so that I have lost alot of work because of it.Now I just get alot of calls asking for an explanation of fault code P0----- etc.
So if its such a good trade tool why dont I see them around ? There are plenty of indies around me using T4 and Autologic,I even considered buying an Autologic a while back for the newer cars, but I'm finding the UCM will do most of what I want.
Yes the Faultmate has very in depth coverage,far more than the others,but as I've said before nobody seems to want more than a car that works as it did when it was new.They dont really care about the one zillion possible dash functions,they are more interested in getting the air suspension off the bloody bump stops or getting the ABS through the MOT.
 
Try having a look at the launch x431, that's what i use and so far have had no problems, it talks to all the various computers and can reset everything i need.

At the end of the day it all comes down to what you expect the unit to do, how many times you expect to use it, and more importantly your budget.....the cheaper the unit, the less it will do, the more expensive the unit ( in therory ), the more it will do.....if the cheap units would do the job we would all have one and save ourselves thousands.

Ok, I've looked at all of these you mentioned, findings as follows:

Autologic £7,000 (ouch!)

Omitec £2,000 including laptop - cannot program/code modules?

BBS L322 Package £3,700 + £250 for reader

Auto Enginuity £300 - cannot program/code modules? Petrol models only

Hawkeye £300 - definitely cannot program anything. Good reader though??

How does my summary sound?

How Independant dealers can afford £7,000 for diagnostics for one marques is beyond me! If you did 100 Land Rovers then they cost the garage £70 each. If you do 7,000 then only £1 each - but nobody does that quantity!

The Auto Enginuity package seems very good:

OE-Level Coverage (Enhanced Interfaces)

So maybe we'll buy that for the Petrol's (updates in the future will cover diesels I'm sure) AND a Hawkeye for scanning the diesels in the meantime.

Anyone have experence with these two products??

One advantage of the BBS stuff is you can buy the hardware and "cherry pick" the software modules that you need. i.e. the areas that give problems. With the L322 it's CAN BUS I think the software for that is about €1400 plus VAT. Plus of course the hardware which is €203 plus cables etc. Trouble is, if you are dealing with a wide range of LR's the bill mounts up.

we have a a 96 P38 2.5 6 cylinder with a "code lock out" light on.
What do we need to to get this off as it won't start or open doors off the key.
An answer would be appreciated and thanks in advance
