Evening all,

I need some advice and am hoping for some input from fellow forum members.

I have a factory 14L 200tdi Rangey Classic. 1993 vintage. I've owned it about 18 months and, apart from a crunchy second gear which is easy to drive around, it's been a brilliant car in that time. It's taken us all over the country from Scotland to Cornwall and not once let us down.

Recently I took it for an MOT and it failed on rust too close to the front nearside body mount plus an anti roll bar link.

Being someone who likes to do a proper job I brought it home and started stripping it down and prodding with a screwdriver. Luckily I have a garage in which to work.

Well it transpires the rust is really really bad. Boot floor is horrendous. Both front inner wings are bad. Inner and outer sills shot (one side worse than other). Rear wing has a hole near the seatbelt mount. Rust on floor next to transmission tunnel. The list goes on.

I blame a lot of it on sopping wet sponge-like underlay

What would you do?

1. Put it on Ebay - what's it worth?
2. Weld it up which would take me for ever but would give a lot of satisfaction when complete
3. Whip out engine and boxes, sell/scrap the rest and use them for a series conversion at some point in the future.

Thanks for any suggestions !

Will

No-one ever told you that prodding underneath Land Rovers with pointy things is not a good idea?
Fire up the welder!

I have the 300tdi,
Had it 5 months and have spent over £2000 on it so far, including another engine..

I'm hoping that's it for a while, was ready to scrap it tother day but got good friends to help with the moral support...

Stick with it they are worth it...

Playing devils advocate could somebody give me an idea what it might be worth as is please? I've been out to it tonight and everywhere I look there is more rust. One of the rear body mounts is totally shot and the crossmember needs work. I think the MOT man must have been having an off day when he only failed it on one thing.

Having a 2 year old at home I wonder whether I am ever going to have enough time to get this fixed. Not to mention skills.

93 RRC factory 200tdi - crunchy second gear - lots of welding required - other than that nice condition - leather seats - new ashcroft VCU / new radiator / new springs - whole file load of history. circa 140K on clock. Ideas of value welcomed.

Thanks

Will

Sub £500 I would think...would be worth more in bits and weigh in the rest!

It's worth more to the owner than anyone else, but with 12 months ticket it may fetch £1000 upwards on eBay...

Thanks for the input - that's definitely made up my mind. I'm going to fix the bugger no matter how long it takes.

And, as somebody else put, once I've done it I will know I have a good solid car.

Thanks

Will

Will, take a look at mine, I thought it was good but keped prodding

I have a 3 year old at home and my rangy at work, I get one night a week after work and one day at the weekend to do it. Taking longer than I wanted but doing it right. My advice is if you have the space then take it apart totally and you will have a better understanding of the situation, and nothing gets in your way then.

Plenty of help available on hear and loads of threads with good pics.

Value wise, do a good job replace/refurbish the box, disco ones are cheap, and should be worth 2.5k + good immaculate ones on flebay go for around 5k.

Good luck.

ita a 4 door and its got 4 cyliders missing...so burn it..

but if you wish to save..beware it will take forever..it will get you down..it will **** off your mrs...it will cost a fair bit in gas and metal..you will wish you had burnt it..

buy a decent mig, dont use disposable gas bottles go rent big one..GET A FIRE EXTINGWISHER..yes spelt that wrong..WHERE goggles when grinding/cutting..

good lock,you will need it..

As virtually everyone has posted - if you have the skills & equipment to diy then go for it, these old stagers need saving but are never worth the cost of restro if you have to pay for it. Shame it's not a V8 but then you can't have everthing :fencing:
