Hi again :D. Just went out in my rangie to the shops as i was pulling in to the car park touched the brakes and nothing. Pedal seems to have lost pressure but now and again it feels like its building up pressure but then goes again had to limp home using the hand brake. Any ideas on what this could. Very lucky it didnt happen on the main road about a minute before. Also front passenger tyre is catching on the radius arm but not on drivers side any help would be great. Cheers guys

Just what i needed to hear :(. Think it might be the pump because when you push the pedal you can hear air blowing/escaping. Any thoughts about the tyre touching the radius arm only on passenger side though. cheers peeps

You need to set the lock stop adjuster bolt on the front of the swivels - it's item 15 on this diagram - when the head of the bolt hits the axle casing the swivel stops swivelling! According to Haynes the top of the bolt head should be 40.5mm from the inside face of the washer (noting that this diagram appears to show the nut (part 16) and washer (part 17) the wrong way round.

It's obvious when you see it.

Pete

Yours is an early RRC so no ABS - it won't be pump or electrical as you will have a servo - check vacuum pipes, look for leaks. do a search there should be plenty about how to check operation of servo etc. I know there was a thread recently about RRC brakes.

Yours has been lifted? What size tyres do you have on it? If they are bigger than 235/70/16 and the lock stops have not been adjusted I would expect the tyre to rub on the radius arm. You should adjust lock stop until there is a minimum clearance of 10mm between tyre and radius arm (take that figure with a pinch of salt but it is something like that just off the top of my head).

Cheers guys. Will go and have a tinker tomorrow. Date of first reg is 20/09/1990 and is a vogue se which i thought had all the mod cons at the time. Looks like the tyre has only been rubbing recently and tyres have definatley been on there for a while. Thanks again for the help will keep me busy.

Just been out and had a look around and the back wheel is soaked in brake fluid. I checked the brake pipe going in to the calibre and seems tight. Seems to be leaking in side the calibre

Sounds like the piston seals are shot. That being the case your options are buy a seal kit and possibly new pistons or replace calliper. To be honest I had a similar problem about a year ago when I found one of the front callipers was leaking brake fluid on to the disk, after looking at cost of rebuilding callipers against getting replacements it was quicker and easier to get replacements, I plan to rebuild the original ones at some point but nice to be able to do it as and when rather than as a priority repair.

I would suggest you take all the brake callipers off and have a good look at them, if one has gone the others probably won't be far off being the same.

BTW thought yours was an older RRC so you might have ABS, if there is a brake problem and you have ABS get a blink code off it (do a search for blink code, lots of info out there) and go from there.

It will do. Servicing the calipers is pretty easy, just time consuming. It's not expensive either.

If your wiper seal retainer rings are shot, I found a great way to get new ones in.

Get the seal ring and then get a medium sand paper and buff the outer edge that goes inwards. Get a lighter sandpaper to clean it up.

Lube with brake fluid and with the caliper in a vice use the handle of a plastic tooth brush; and tap the ring in with a toffee hammer. Do opposite sides and then work around the rim.

Works a treat and is really tight ;)
