Hi,
I have a 1996 RR 2.5 DSE Auto. I'm getting very poor fuel consumption roughly, 19mpg to a max of around 21mpg. THis is on runs. I imagine its less around town.

I know this is too low for this car. How can I improve this.
What do you guys think is wrong?

thanks

This has been covered a few times in the very recent past, maybe a search on this forum will yield results...but you could try looking at having the pump retimed, or check the function of the in tank pump as thiscan cause low MPG results.

Check your leak off pipes too, as these can leak a surpising amount of diesel.

Also check the top of the Fuel Injection Pump, as the seals can leak.

Also if you have a Powerbox, remap or performance chip fitted this will increase fuelling.

The fitment of a cheaper 'Hot Start Fix' without a timed relay will foul the EDC system into constant over fuelling as it will indicate the engine is always cold, and as such will run on the Fuel Rich fuelling map.

These are some things to check...but do a search.

My DSE averages 26.2mpg with a good mix of Country lanes, A roads and Motorways...

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. Very informative.

I've just noticed a liquid forming just about the seal on my number one injector. Closes to front of the car.

Could this be causing all the problems...?

It could also be the fuel pump because sometimes i have trouble starting the car, almost as if it has no fuel? does not happen much though.

I running on veg if it makes any differences all though I had the same problems when running on regualar diesel.

Depending on the Veg mix you use, it can ruin the seals in the FIP.

If you have trouble starting the car with less than 3rd of a tank, this could mean the In Tank Pump is weak or shot which will result in reduced mpg....

Check the clear pipe to the filter on the lefthand side of the engine for small air bubbles or air pockets as this can mean the leak off pipes are split.

Also while you under the bonnet, check the MAP (Manifold Air Pressure) pipe isn't blocked, split or disconnected, although this will usually be accompanied with a lack of power.

If you have a small leak on the injector, it would be best to replace all the injector seals, as these oftentimes do get hard and brittle.

The liquid in the injector well is diesel leaking from the spill pipe. Change your spill pipes all the way back to main union.

Hi!

Just wanted to check how you got on?

I have also some bad fuel consumption, roughly 19,28. I drive some bit on motorway and city also.

I haven't a trimbox, it's a diesel and I recently changed the lift pump. Had some problem with the diesel going back into the tank from engine but I installed a NRV on the hose from filter to FIP and now it works well. Have some problem starting it on the mornings but that is glow plugs that needs to be changed.

Thanks
