Ramps or axle stands

back to the issue, i put the bottle jack (LR) inbetween the axle and the chassis(bumpstop area) thats how i change springs etc too as the wheels stay on floor with full weight so it's stable but you can dislocate the springs to remove them, and get exhausts out

The 3 ton stands that we have are quite small for the weight, but at least we know that there won't be any safety issues as long as they are set correctly.

The jack size also affects how easy it will be to lift the vehicle in the first place, a one-ton trolley jack struggles to lift the front of our D2 V8, while the 2.5ton does it much more easily. You still need a fair bit of grunt even then, as the handles are quite short for the effort needed.

Plus, as has already been said, the larger jacks have a higher lift.

If I was buying now, AFTER we bought the Disco, I'd go for an even larger jack and stands, we bought these originally for servicing our two Renault Trafic vans and an Astravan.

Use your noggin - if youre going to do the job do it safely , use good quality equipment
on a good surface--remember the golden rule --all hydraulic lifting equipment when under
load will at some time- fail - gravity never will. Good quality axle stands are the bear minimum. Have a look on flea bay there are often some heavy duty car ramps for sale
at reasonable prices,I made up a set from old railway sleepers and angle iron.

i've got a 20 tonne lorry jack that i use at home/work, had the landy almost rolling and rear springs dislocated from jacking it 70% it's travel on the chassis

FYI I bought some 3ton axle stands from halfords yesterday, which after using them appear to be completely adequate for the job. £19 (btw 3 ton refers to 1.5t each)
Screwfix had some 3ton, 'fold-up' stands for £19
Partco had some 3ton for £35+vat, but had no flat base (like 3 spikes) which seemed a little more unstable.
Local motor factors had standard design 2ton stands for £14 (design un-changed for atleast 20 years)
So that's what is out there at the moment.

Trago have the 3 tonne ones (zackly the same as the Halfrauds ones) for £9.99.

Well use a 3 ton halfords jack which ive had for about 6 year and is superb and ive now got som 6 ton stands from paddock which are 22.50 plus vat and a bargain.
The cheap 2 or 3 ton stands are ok for cars but i dont think they are sturdy enough for a disco when you extend them.
And ive worked on a lot of cars in the 23 years ie been working on them.
Just my opinion.
