I'm doing a full overhaul on an axle and if I can avoid using the Railko bush design I'd like to. Searching with Google doesn't really help, so I'm asking here! Changing the housings is a step too far, but although the swivel balls are pretty good, I'd change them if it were necessary.

I used to wonder about that too, when we had the Series. A tapered roller bearing seems like it is a much better job somehow. No, I don't know how easy it is, because I've not actually tried it

not that i know off but th same ball is later used on td5s were they do use a top bearing and abs discos and rrc use a thrust bearing

In the interests of science I'd be tempted to get a secondhand one and experiment to see if it is possible to get a roller bearing to fit without any machining.

Guess what I'm doing on Wednesday?! I going to look at and measure up a ball designed to take a top race and compare it with mine. I'm just trying to finish cad modelling the gearbox/engine adapter ring today, and I've got to go and sort out a mini disaster in Hertfordshire tomorrow.

Couldn't resist so took a screen break. Just done a bit of measuring of my Railko-type setup. I have a plan, but I'm not going to start on that until this drawing is emailed and got the chassis ordered.
