Afternoon gentle men, this has probably been asked before, with reference to replacing radious arm bushes with corrective ones.
I've seen how to remove the stubborn ones, it's fitting the new corrective ones without the use of a hydraulic bench press.
As most of us mere mortals I don't have one, and the cost of a decent 20 ton one out ways the amount it would be used. So is there a way of installing them with out damaging them.
As with all bushes they need to go in square.
So has anyone done this successfully without a press? Or is there any one local to me who has a press who could do me a favour pushing the buggers in? I live in Verwood Dorset.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated
Dave.

Local garage is best bet unless a kindly local can squeeze you in for a brew an a chat.

No one round here has one :( so I might as well bite the bullet get one and help others in same situation. Garages can be a bit hit and miss if you know what I mean, as in ask the one guy who wants what's in your wallet. And I'm not talking about couple of beers either.

A good G-Clamp ball joint tool might work there, which you could also use to replace the steering knuckle ball joints when they're due. But when I was in the same place as you are, I went ahead and bought a 20 Ton hydraulic press for something like 175 Pounds. It's handy to have and done many other things with it, including the bushes on the Watts linkage and wheel bearings on a Ford. Easier if you freeze the new bushes before install and then put a thin film of lubrication to reduce friction.

Cheers for that npg, well you made me make my mind up buying seems the way to go. Plus like you said it will help with other things that are landrover lol. Wife won't be happy but can't do right all the time lol
Thanks for the freezer tip
Dave

Total respect buddy, my wife isn't as bad as I make her sound but she watches the pennies like a hawk. But I must say I did give up smoking over a year ago so technically that's money that would of gone up in smoke.
So is the 20 ton a better option say to a 12 ton? I think I just answers that for me self lol.
Nice chatting with you.
Hope we can chat again fella

No problem buddy but sometimes we all need reminding the difference between an expenditure and an investment, if that makes sense ! When I bought mine, I was too toying with the idea of getting a 12 ton press instead, since they are cheaper and slightly smaller. But the thing is you never know the magnitude of the force needed, especially when removing rusty components and I am not comfortable with pushing tools to the limit. Steel under that kind of tension can cause serious damage if things go wrong. Of course, you can get a press with a pressure gauge but they are more expensive and they have flexi pipes which you'd probably need to inspect and change from time to time. So I decided on the 20 ton version and hopefully, I have myself covered for whatever needs to be done, including pressing grapes to make wine :)

Good luck

Forgot to add - you're gonna need some adapters to sit on the outer edge of the bush, bearing, etc. that go right under the press. You can either buy these separately or you can use a large socket or a piece of a metal pipe.
