R380's - what'll fit a TD5?

Been having gearbox issues for a while, and a nasty noise on startup (with clutch depressed) or on coming down the gears (especially 3 to 2, and 2 to 1). Last week, got halfway out onto a major A-Road roundabout and then had no drive at all - move the selector 1 through 5 no clutch at all.

So, after being RAC'd home, the TD5 is sitting on the driveway looking sorry for itself, and I reckon i've got a dead gearbox, as when I locked the diff I could get the front wheels to turn with the rear, but in any gear no resistance from the engine.

Trying to find a TD5 box is proving a nightmare, but there are masses of 300Tdi R380's around - so my question is

Will/Can an R380 from a late 300Tdi fit/be made to fit a 2000 reg TD5?

Is it a change of bellhousing and input shaft? or more involved? or easier?

Cheers

could be just buggered clutch ,td5 gearbox uses larger front input bearing so not interchangeable with std 300 tdi box which have the smaller bearing ,unless you could find k suffix 300 box then conversion is easy ,

Cheers James,

clutch pedal feels the same as it did before the loss of traction - I would've assumed that if I put in gear and started that it would engage drive if the clutch - hence my thought its the box that's gone.

could be either ,clutch centers rip out and you cant tell on pedal ,box issue should show in oil ,though there are a couple of issues that dont allways

hmm, could be a cheaper fix than I thought then if the clutch has really let go like that... Going to be a bitch whatever I do next, some #### has had a go at the transfer box before and rounded off one bolt, and I cant get Mr Angle Grinder onto that one, so the whole lot has to come off in one - that's going to be fun on the driveway....

Well I'll be - whipped (hur hur hur) the gearbox off this afternoon, and blow me, if there wasn't a shed load of shrapnel in the bell housing and the two parts of the clutch plate doing their own thing. So new clutch it shall be :)

Thanks James, saved me a load of hassle...
